SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: Final Rosters set for PSG, Legia and Red Star
Paris-Saint Germain, Legia Warsaw and Red Star Belgrade have released rosters for the Chicago Sister Cities Cup which begins on Wednesday Night at Toyota Park, outside Chicago.
Red Star omitted star forward Dejan Lekić who is with the Serbian National team in their preparations for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but for the most part are bringing the core of the lineup that helped the team finish 2nd in the Serbian Jelen SuperLiga in 2009-10.
PSG’s roster boasts some huge names in Grégory Coupet, Mateja Kežman and Claude Makélélé, to name but a few.
Makélélé, in addition to having more accent marks in his name than many of the Red star players have vowels, is one of the most decorated players in the tournament, having won a World Cup and European Championship with France and a Champions League title with Real Madrid, as well as numerous domestic titles with the Galacticos and Chelsea.
Legia Warsaw finished in missed qualifying for the 2010-11 Europa League, by one point on the last day of the season. The team is led by Maciej Iwański who finished the 2009-10 campaign at the top of the Polish League in assists (11), Legia.
The Fire have played Legia Warsaw before, defeating them 3-2 in June 1999. Fire Alumni who came from the Polish side include 1998 Inaugural Season Double Winning Fire players Jerzy Podbrożny and Roman Kosecki.
Interestingly, Mateja Kežman of PSG might be going up against his home town side on Saturday as he was born in Belgrade in 1979, back when it was Yugoslavia. He has 49 caps for Serbia and Montenegro. Incidentally this writer thinks the 31 year-old Kežman would be a perfect Designated Player for the Chicago Fire, you heard it here first.
