Something to Cheer About at Eastlands

TUESDAY’S SHORT CORNERS – INTERNATIONAL SOCCER NEW, NOTES AND RUMORS

MANCHESTER CITY SPENDING SPREE LOOMING

It is getting increasingly difficult for Manchester City fans to get a handle on all the signings that MAY take place at Eastlands, as there are so many and some contradict each other.

The most recent is the long rumored signing of Yaya Toure as part of a $100 million spending spree that also includes David Silva and Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.

Toure’s move to City, which will put him on the same club as his brother Kolo, was all but confirmed by the Barcelona website.

“In the case of Toure,” the statement read “[Barcelona director-general Joan] Oliver has recognized an understanding between the club interested in the midfielder, Manchester City, and Barca, but the transfer cannot be made official yet.”

Silva is reported to be joining Toure in the midfield on the blue side of Manchester this season. The Spanish international, currently (more…)

WORLD CUP INJURY UPDATE – JUNE 15

DROGBA AWAITS FIFA DECISION

Didier Drogba, and the rest of the world, will be awaiting a ruling by FIFA Tuesday morning to decide if the Ivory Coast striker will be allowed to sport a protective cast in the Elephants Group G opener.

“There has been a Fifa meeting – we will know later.” Ivory Coast manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said on Monday.

This is yet another complication in the roller-coaster story of Drogba’s World Cup. Suffering a broken arm in a friendly tune-up just days prior to the World Cup, initial reports had the Chelsea striker out of the World Cup. There followed talk of an emergency surgery procedure that could see Drogba (more…)

PUGET SOUND-OFF – THE WORLD CUP, SO FAR…

Mike Mulvihill

Here’s my take on the World Cup, so far –

·         Still getting used to waking up at 4:30 – now going to bed at 9:30 to see if that makes it easier.

·         Seen most of all games…even watching at work via this web site… http://www.channelsurfing.net

·         Just an opinion but the ESPN radio crew is really good. SHEP Messing is very loud like he’s got the mic halfway down his throat but the play by play man is really good (can’t find his name)

Opinions So Far:

o   Group A: France sux, Uruguay could/should have won. Would have loved SA to beat Mexico and (more…)

2010 WORLD CUP: ENGLAND v UNITED STATES – WHAT TO WATCH FOR

BEST FINISH

England – Champions (1966)

United States – 3rd (1950)

UNITED STATES

The United States, like South Korea, Japan and Mexico are teams that are better than most in the World except maybe the top 15. The States have a solid starting XI and good subs, and even have a bit of a style and tactical acumen. None of these attributes, as any longtime fan of the United States will tell you, were present 20 years ago.

The States even have gifted individual talent in the wonderful vision of Landon Donovan, the grit of Clint Dempsey, the sheer power and finesse of Jozy Altidore and the raw speed that is present amongst so many of the forwards in the US side.

SOCCER ON THE BOX – SOCCER ON TV THIS WEEKEND

ESPN2 to provide 24 straight hours of World Cup Pre-game

World Cup coverage will start a day early on ESPN2, next week as the channel will be offering a 24 hour pregame. That is straight World Cup coverage, discussion, documentaries, interviews and even a concert featuring the Black Eyed Peas and Shakira. Well done ESPN2.

MLS in talks with cable channel Versus

Major League Soccer’s deal with Fox Soccer Channel is up at the end of this season and league officials have met with exec’s from Comcast owned sports network Versus. It is certainly to early to tell if MLS is courting other broadcast partners to influence later negotiations with Fox, which currently has rights to MLS games as well as matches organized by the MLS owned Soccer United Marketing, or to discuss Versus’ strategy for development of the MLS and it’s broadcasts. Versus has certainly done a very good job for the NHL in a similar capacity. We shall see.

Soccer on TV this weekend

Certainly the match that has everyone excited, is the final tune-up for the US national team ahead of next week’s World Cup Group C opener against England on June 12.

Saturday morning’s match against Australia on ESPN2 / Galavision should be more than a final dress rehearsal for the side, it should be a good chance to see how the US’s Ultimate XI looks over 90 minutes.

In MLS action, DC and RSL renew the extra time US Open Cup thriller from Wednesday night, with RSL hoping for a different (more…)

MANCHESTER UNITED DERIDES FAN MOVEMENT AND CLAIMS THE CLUB IS NOT FOR SALE

Manchester United chief executive David Gill denied the club is for sale at gives no credence to the either the Red Knights or the ‘Green and Gold’ movement.

These statements come amid persistent rumors that fan-run group Red Knights are close to a take over. The Glazers, owners of United since 2005, have regularly denied that they are accepting bids for the club.

The fan driven ‘Green and Gold’ movement, designed to oust the Glazer family, is a vocal collection of (more…)

WEEKEND WORLD CUP WRAP

UNITED STATES WINS SEND-OFF AGAINST TURKEY

The United States won their final World Cup tune-up on home soil Saturday, coming from behind to beat Turkey in front of 55,000 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Second half goals by Altidore and Dempsey put the United States on top and capped off a thrilling final 45 minutes for the US, who trailed after Arda Turan put the Turks up in the 27th minute.

Landon Donovan set up both goals in the comeback for the US who hadn’t looked in sync in the first half.

“We’re going to be as good as we want to be,” Donovan said. “And if we play the way we’re capable of (more…)

The United States will entertain – Scrappiness is the Key to the teams World Cup Ambitions

The World Soccer Community will be able to count on one thing from the United States this summer at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa; entertainment.

The United States national team possesses one key soccer attribute, and attribute that is unlikely to lift the World Cup come July 11, but one that will thrill fans and neutrals alike; they are scrappy. For a fan, it is my least favorite attribute as it can only lead to frustration as one watches their team struggle, dodge and survive, but at the same time it is a quality that can put a team in a position to do just that, survive.

A fan wants his or her team to be the Superman of the sport. Indestructible, fluid and unfazed. A team that will win 2-0 against most teams in (more…)

BRAZIL TO PLAY UNITED STATES AT NEW MEDOWLANDS

The U.S. men’s national team is scheduled to play Brazil at the New Meadowlands on August 10 in its first match following the 2010 World Cup.

The match is scheduled on an official FIFA date, so there is a chance both the full line-ups of both teams will be called in for the match.

Though the match will be the first time either Brazil or the United States play at New Medowlands, it will be the fourth time in three years the two teams have tangled, including two meetings in last summers Confederations Cup.

SOCCER ON THE BOX: Soccer on TV this Weekend

Tons of World Cup tune-ups on the box this weekend, but don’t bother looking for the Ireland v Algeria match on the ‘ol Box, because you won’t find it.

Why didn’t any network pay for the rights to show American fans a rare glimpse an unknown Group C team? Plus, I just want to see Ireland play, stupid Thierry Henry. Very frustrating.

Other tune-ups include the US v Turkey on Saturday in a match that not only will be the last on American soil until after the World Cup, but it will be the first time we might see the United States play at ‘Fully Armed and Operational’ levels.

AVRAM GRANT TO MANAGE WEST HAM UNITED

Many will feel that Avram Grant is a glutton for punishment. After do his best in the worst possible situation at Portsmouth, Grant will take the reigns at struggling West Ham United, replacing Gianfranco Zola in the position. Grant resigned from his post at Portsmouth after the team’s unlikely appearance in the FA Cup Final.

ESSIEN RULED OUT OF WORLD CUP

A huge blow was dealt to Ghana’s World Cup ambitions as Michael Essien was ruled out of the World Cup due to a knee injury suffered during January’s African Nations Cup. Ghana manager Milovan Rajevac had been hopeful that Essien would be ruled fit in time but the FA released a statement stating that the Chelsea star would not be fully fit until late July.

Forwards

Jozy Altidore – Villarreal

Edson Buddle – Los Angeles Galaxy

Clint Dempsey – Fulham FC

Robbie Findley – Real Salt Lake

Herculez Gomez – CF Pachuca

The most glaring was the omission of Brian Ching. An established, experience striker, Ching was healthy and performing well in camp, but the decision was to go with Findley who is neither established nor experienced at this level. Though recovering from hamstring problems, Ching looked a bright spot in the Tuesday night match against the Czech Republic.

Findley is a quality player and can olnly get experience at the top level by playing at the top level. He has, no doubt, been brought in to replace some of the speed the team lost when it lost Charlie Davies
