CHELSEA’S AFRICAN PAIR READY FOR PREMIER LEAGUE RETURN

Chelsea’s African duo Michael Essien and Jon Obi Mikel are set to return to Stamford Bridge after long injuries that kept both out of the World Cup.

Nigeria’s Mikel and Ghana’s Essien both had time during the World Cup to return to fitness and now look set to join the club for Chelsea’s opening Premier League fixture August 14.

“There should be no problem whatsoever,” Chelsea assistant Ray Wilkins told soccernet. “Mikel is slightly in advance of Michael Essien but they are both working very well indeed.

“They have been working double sessions for the last week and we will get them really firing before the season starts.”

AC MILAN IN FOR PODOLSKI, BUT ONLY IF…

AC Milan will splash to cash to but German striker Lukas Podolski, but only if they can first find a buyer for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, preferably to a Premier League club.

The 1 FC Koln striker has come back into vogue after a successful run in the World Cup, and Milan have sized up the 25-year-old who is a more versatile player than Huntelaar, being able to play as a more conventional forward. Nothing however will move the Rossoneri to approach unless they have cah in hand for Huntelaar.

“Podolski will arrive only if one condition is met and that is the transfer of Huntelaar to the (English) Premier League, which would then open a few paths from a financial standpoint.” Milan Vice-president Adriano Galliani told Sky Sport 24.

The United States will entertain – Scrappiness is the Key to the teams World Cup Ambitions

The World Soccer Community will be able to count on one thing from the United States this summer at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa; entertainment.

The United States national team possesses one key soccer attribute, and attribute that is unlikely to lift the World Cup come July 11, but one that will thrill fans and neutrals alike; they are scrappy. For a fan, it is my least favorite attribute as it can only lead to frustration as one watches their team struggle, dodge and survive, but at the same time it is a quality that can put a team in a position to do just that, survive.

A fan wants his or her team to be the Superman of the sport. Indestructible, fluid and unfazed. A team that will win 2-0 against most teams in (more…)

SLOPPY EXPERIMENTAL DEFENSE COSTS UNITED STATES AGAINST CZECH REPUBLIC

Bob Bradley was never looking for a result in Tuesday nights US National Team tussle with the Czech Republic in Hartford.

The match was always going to be about certain players fitness levels, and a last chance to impress for some others.  The result, a 4-2 loss, was secondary to evaluation.

The US starting defense did well for 45 minutes even though Oguchi Onyewu was playing his first match since October and Regular starters Jay DeMerit and Captain Carlos Bocanegra did not dress.

Clarence Goodson who started in the middle with Onyewu looked impressive. He not only had a sound match defensively, he played a part in both US Goals, possibly playing himself on to the flight to South Africa on Sunday.

The United States Soccer Federation and Nike unveiled the new Home Strip for the US Men’s National team on Thursday at Nike Town in New York.
