BOLTON WANDERERS v TORONTO FC – ROSTER, LIVE STREAM

BOLTON WANDERERS v TORONTO FC – ROSTER, LIVE STREAM

United States international Stuart Holden has joined his Bolton Wanderers teammates in Toronto ahead of the clubs pre-season match with Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC.

Holden had been given time off after his World Cup duty with the United States, but after speaking with Bolton manager Owen Coyle, he decided to meet the team in Canada from his time off with his family in Houston.

“The gaffer gave me the option of coming out here or meeting the squad back in England with Chungy (Korea Republic midfielder Lee Chung-Yong, who also has time off in the wake of the World Cup)  but for me, being from the US, I really wanted to finish off the tour with the guys and get back amongst it,” Holden told the Bolton News. “I wanted to make a stand and show I’m committed to this season.”

Familiar with the Canadian side from his time in MLS with the Houston Dynamo, the 24-year-old had nothing but praise for Toronto and Toronto FC.

“Toronto are a really well-supported team. They’re fairly young and since they have been in the league had some mixed results, but this year is the best they have done. The stadium is probably the second to Seattle in MLS in terms of atmosphere.”

Will Holden contribute after joining the squad so late before the match?

“I’d love to play a part although I haven’t had a long chat with the gaffer about it yet. I’ll only have one day of training under my belt, so if he chooses to leave me out, that’s his decision.”

The match, the 2010 edition of the Carlsburg Cup which annually pits Toronto FC against an International opponent, is scheduled to kickoff Wednesday Night at 7:30pm ET from BMO Field.

Toronto FC may also feature some players that are not on the Red’s senior roster. The Red’s will finally have the services of recently signed designated player Mista, who is expected to make his debut tonight and play 45 minutes in the match.

TFC Academy players Matt Stinson, Doneil Henry, Nicholas Lindsay, Oscar Cordon and Brennan McNicoll all trained with the team this week and may make it in the squad.

Four trialists may also factor into Preki’s squad. Keep in mind that the remaining 12 players will be announced on Thursday and that All-Star manager Bruce Arena can choose the actual starting XI from the entire squad.

A total of four Galaxy players make the XI followed by three RSL players and two from the Crew. One each from the Chicago Fire and Toronto FC. Landon Donovan will feature in his 10th appearance.

The MLS official website claims that 45,000 seats have been sold for Houston’s first ever All-Star game.

The match, which kicks off at 8:30pm ET and can be seen on on ESPN2, is scheduled right in the heart of CONCACAF Champions League action, and the Seattle Sounders will actually be playing at the same time the All-Stars tussle with United, thus eliminating one of the Leagues most followed teams from being a part of the festivities.  The Columbus Crew and LA galaxy players will see limited time due to their participation in the Champions League.  The league seems caught between high priorities here.

LES ROUGES REPORT: An Occasional Update on Canadian Soccer

July 8, 2010

LES ROUGES REPORT

An Occasional Update on Canadian Soccer

NO CANADIAN WORLD CUP UNTIL 2034

Canada will not attempt to host the World Cup until at least 2034, according to the Canadian Soccer Association.

“Canada has great organizational ability to host a FIFA men’s World Cup, as it has for a Summer Olympics and two Winter Olympics, so certainly, from a Canadian perspective, we would be great hosts for a men’s World Cup,” said the CSA’s general secretary Peter Montopoli, who cited a number of concerns that would have to be addressed before the tournament could be even considered, including the proper time frame. “We would have to wait for our turn,”

The United States has put in a bid for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup and, if successful, the tournament would not likely return to North America for decades.

Montopoli also stated finance, infrastructure and national team performance as key areas that would have to be improved upon.

Stadium requirements would also have to be met, and the CSA would need a minimum of 10 world-class facilities capable of holding (more…)

DESIGNATED PLAYER WATCH

With The World Cup winding down, it is only a matter of time before Major League Soccer fans will begin to look forward to their teams’ to target tantalizing talent. So here is an occasional look into the rumors and facts regarding the potential crop of household names coming to a soccer specific stadium near you.

MLS TO BATTLE BIG EUROPEAN CLUBS FOR POSSIBLE DP’S

Thierry Henry’s quick exit from the World Cup with France will have many New York Red Bull fans sharing a secret smile. Henry is expected to ink a two-year designated player contract with Major League Soccer to play Eastern Conference leaders.

Although the deal has been long-rumored to be done, there are still rumblings that the player may end up in the Premier League.

Henry is not the only example of MLS having to fight for potential DP’s.

Reports out of Spain have Real Madrid icon and MLS DP target Raul being wooed by Serie A side Sampadoria and Premier League side Blackburn Rovers. These reports come justdays after Bundesliga side Shalke 04 put in a bid.

Capped 102 times for Spain and a life-long Real Madrid player, the 33-year-old has found himself surplus to requirements with Los Merengues. Schalke are looking for someone to replace Kevin Kuranyi who moved on to Dynamo Moscow.

Juventus Striker David Trezeguet is also being pursued by MLS but now seems to have an offer from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER RETURNS TO ACTION – MLS WEEK 13 PREVIEW

Most everyone’s eyes will be on the World Cup this weekend, and rightly so, the sheer weight of match-ups over the next four days is incredible.

Having said that, lets take a look at what we have in store for ourselves this weekend and touch on some of the stories we may have missed while over-indulging in the World Cup Garden of Eden.

PPL PARK OPENS IN PHILADELPHIA THIS SUNDAY
The Philadelphia Union fans will agree with Tom Petty, the waiting is the hardest part, but now the wait is over as Peter Nowak’s boys will christen their new home, PPL Park on Sunday against Seattle Sounders at 5pm ET. The match will be shown on ESPN2 and will see Union attempt to turn around a less than stellar Expansion campaign. Union are dead last in the East having garnered 7 points from 10 matches. Philly fans will be hoping that the League’s newest Soccer Specific gem will provide the inspiration for some points down the stretch.

SACHA KLJESTAN MOVES TO EUROPE
Belgian Champions Anderlicht acquired Chivas USA captain Sacha Kljestan during the World Cup break leaving the Goats, who are in the midst of a five game losing streak, missing some key talent.  Manager Martin Vasquez has brought for Chivas USA midfield standout Paulo Nagamura back into the side with an aim to fill the missing Kljestan’s shoes. Another help for Chivas might come in the form of Venezuelan international
Giancarlo Maldonado who is training with the team.

BLAISE NKUFO IS COMING TO SEATTLE
This deal was done early in the season, but since then we have all had a chance to see Nkufo play for Switzerland in (more…)

TORONTO FC WIN CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

Toronto FC were not even in action tonight, but the Reds secured their second straight Nutrilite Canadian Championship.

Vancouver Whitecaps needed to secure a win at Montreal against the Impact tonight in order to stay alive in the NCC.

The two sides played a listless first half in front of 11,000 fans at Saputo Stadium, but the ‘Caps came out blazing in the second half getting a goal from Ansu Toure in the 50th minute. Vancouver seemed a new team.

NUTRILITE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP-WEEK 5 PREVIEW

Montreal Impact have a chance to play spoiler for the Vancouver Whitecaps Nutrilite Canadian Championship dreams for the second straight year.

In the final match of the 2009 NCC Montreal played what amounts to a youth side and was punished by Toronto FC who need a lopsided win to secure the title from Vancouver.

In 2010 Montreal, who is already eliminated from the competition, will have to play spoiler by action as opposed to inaction, as Vancouver needs the maximum points from Wednesday Nights visit to Saputo Stadium in order to set up a chance to win the Voyageurs Cup next week in Toronto.

The now legendary story of the 09 NCC seems to be a demon that permeates every article and conversation regarding the NCC, but hopefully, one way or the other, that demon will be exorcised Wednesday Night in Quebec.

What Impact manager Marc dos Santos will do with his lineups is a mystery.

17 YEAR-OLD TORONTO FC ROOKIE FORCED TO RETIRE DUE TO HEART CONDITION

May 19, 2010

17 YEAR-OLD TORONTO FC ROOKIE FORCED TO RETIRE DUE TO HEART CONDITION

Zac Herold was on thr precipice of a future in professional soccer, just four months ago. The 17 year-old defender was a standout with the U.S. under-17 residency program, and Major League Soccer side Toronto FC used their first pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. Then came the press release on Monday. A press release to announce his retirement.

“Announcing my retirement from soccer at this age is something I never, ever thought would happen to me,” Herold said in the statement Monday.

“This news was very hard to take but I know it’s the best decision for me and my health,” he added.

Herold, who turns 18 June 7, suffers from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), which causes abnormal thickening of a part of the heart muscle.  Strenuous exercise for HCM sufferers can trigger a potentially fatal irregular heart rhythm, or arrhythmia.

HCM is not uncommon and according to the head of cardiology for Major League Soccer,Dr. Christine Lawless, the condition is found in about one in 500 people and has been linked to the deaths of such athletes as, Russian hockey player Alexei Cherepanov and Cameroon soccer star Marc-Vivien Foe who died on the field during a match at the Confederations Cup in 2003.

The irregularity was discovered by Toronto FC team doctor Ira Smith, the team’s doctor, during the Red’s pre-season

“It shouldn’t have any impact on his day-to-day activities, but for the rest of his life, Herold’s exercise will be limited.” said Dr. Smith during a Monday press conference. “The main concern was the right diagnosis”

The announcement was felt throughout the organization.

“Zac’s health was first and foremost in this process,” Mo Johnston, Toronto’s director of soccer, said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to Zac and his family; it’s a very difficult situation. We felt it was the right thing to do by honoring him in front of our fans, and give them a chance to show their support.”

I am grateful to Dr. Smith, and all the specialists I’ve seen over the last few months — this news was very hard to take but I know it’s the best decision for me and my health.

“My parents have been with me every step of the way, and it means so much to me that I’m able to retire as a Toronto FC player. The whole team has been wonderful to me and my family and although it’ll be a tough day, I’m looking forward to seeing everyone on the 22nd.”

Herold will be honored by the team before the May 22 game against New England at BMO Field.

NUTRILITE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP-WEEK 4 PREVIEW-Vancouver Look to Stay Alive at Home

Toronto FC has their 2010 Nutrilite Canadian Championship destiny in their hands this week. A win against Vancouver Whitecaps at rainy Swangard Stadium Wednesday Night will give the Reds the tournament with two games yet to play.

The shoe is on the other foot for the Whitecaps. With three points, Vancouver will live to fight another day. Or at least die another day, as they must take maximum points in their final three matches. The ‘Caps must play like they have nothing to loose.

“It’s a do or die game basically,” Whitecaps keeper Jay Nolly told CTV. ”We know we need a win or a tie to keep going. They know if they get a win it’s all over.”

“We’re not afraid of them,” said ‘Caps forward Marcus Haber. “We’re confident in our own abilities and we’re not going to worry about them too much. We’re just going to focus on ourselves.”

Three consecutive draws at home will hurt a teams confidence though, especially when one of those matches were to Montreal in Week 2 of the NCC. A match that, if won, would have changed the face of the tournament and given Vancouver a little breathing room.
