SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: BOCA ANNOUNCE ROSTER, LEAVE STARS AT HOME

SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: BOCA ANNOUNCE ROSTER, LEAVE STARS AT HOME

Boca juniors Head coach Roberto Pompei announced his travel roster for Boca Juniors matches against Los Angeles Galaxy, Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers on Wednesday, but at the same time news was released that Juan Roman Riquelme has had surgery on his knee. A move that will prevent him from playing in the early parts of next season, let alone the three match US Tour.

This will come as a blow to Galaxy fans who already were disappointed that Martin Palermo was included in the Argentina 30-man squad for the 2010 World Cup.

Galaxy fans could see an advertisement glowing over the 405 freeway, telling them to buy tickets to see Palermo and Riquelme this Saturday Night, but alas, that is not the case.

SEATTLE SOUNDERS TO ISSUE CREDIT TO SEASON TICKET HOLDERS AFTER DISMAL PERFORMANCE

May 9, 2010

SEATTLE SOUNDERS TO ISSUE CREDIT TO SEASON TICKET HOLDERS AFTER DISMAL PERFORMANCE

In a move unique in the annals of Major League Soccer, Seattle Sounders FC are refunding their season ticket holders after the teams performance in a loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday Night.  A franchise record of 36,273 showed up at Qwest Field to see the Sounders tangle with the league leading Galaxy, but had to suffer through the 4-0 loss, which was also a franchise record.

“That wasn’t Sounders soccer and it was quite frankly embarrassing, humiliating and the fans don’t deserve that,” said Sounders FC owner and general manager Adrian Hanauer on the team’s website. “The refund will come in the form of a credit against next year’s season tickets. We want our fans committed for the long haul and we think this is the right thing to do for our fans.”

The news of the credit was on the local Seattle news Sunday night, but not every fan welcomed the news.

“I appreciate what they’re doing” said Mike Mulvihill, a Sounders season ticket holder. “But I’d rather them charge me, and use the money to buy a goalscorer.”

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

April 30, 2010

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Pachuca scored a wonder goal in the 93rd minute to beat Cruz Azul on aggregate Wednesday night and claim the CONCACAF Champions League title and secure a place in the World Club Cup. Cruz Azul had won the first leg 2-1 in Mexico City last Wednesday and it set up a thrilling second leg that culminated in a thrilling finish. A truly entertaining affair, if anyone had cared enough to watch it.

The 2009-10 edition of the CONCACAF Champions League was entertaining at times, but lets face it, this competition is never going anywhere until the Major League Soccer teams start to show that they belong in the tournament. Aside from the Pachuca-Houston matches a few years ago the MLS sides have looked woeful, outmatched and out of shape, and there are reasons for that, to be sure, but let us not, however, take anything away from the prowess of the teams from south of the Rio Grande.

SUMMER FRIENDLIES UPDATE: BOCA AND CELTIC TO SEATTLE

April 29, 2010

SUMMER FRIENDLIES UPDATE: SEATTLE TO HOST BOCA JUNIORS AND CELTIC

The Seattle Sounders dove into the international summer friendly pool on Wednesday announcing a pair of  friendlies either side of the World Cup.

Boca Juniors, the Argentine Super Club will play Seattle on May 26 at Qwest Field , just three days after they take on the LA Galaxy at the Home Depot Center.

Boca Juniors will have a lineup that is scheduled to include the ageless Martin Palermo and Juan Roman Riquelme, both of whom had been pursued by MLS teams in the past.

One of the most popular clubs in the world, Boca Juniors have another fan in Seattle coach Sigi Schmid “They have always been the team in South America that I sort of followed just because of their history and their tradition,” said Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid.

July 18th will see Scottish powerhouse Glasgow Celtic return to Qwest Field on July 18, making it the clubs fourth trip to Seattle.

Team owner and General Manager Adrian Hanauer, looked forward to the Sounders friendlies against what he called “two very storied franchises that will bring a lot of fun to Qwest Field in May and July.

“It’s an opportunity for us to test ourselves against some of the best teams internationally and we are looking forward to it.”

Hanauer said that although there were some more recognizable clubs out there and available for summer friendlies, the Sounders avoided teams that would have depleted star-power due to the proximity of the friendlies to the World Cup.

“That didn’t sit very well with us relative to delivering for our fans,” Hanauer said.

Sounders faithful will be delighted to find that both games are included in the Sounders season ticket package and that a third friendly was being lined up for this fall.

Fans may be less delighted to hear that Seattle will be sporting their new third kit, named ‘Electricity Yellow’ in both matches.

Individual tickets for the Boca Juniors match go on sale Monday May 3 and for Celtic on June 1.

US OPEN CUP QUALIFYING PREVIEW: RED BULL v UNION

April 27, 2010

US OPEN CUP QUALIFYING PREVIEW: RED BULL v UNION

Two matches in the US Open Cup qualifying tournament for Major League Soccer teams are scheduled to take place this week.

Tuesday will see New York Red Bull host Philadelphia Union at Red Bull Arena. The two teams met in MLS Week 5 play on Saturday with the Red Bulls posting a 2-1 victory. The winner will host New England Revolution on May 12.

What will be different when the two teams tussle again Tuesday? For a start, there is a big difference in the approach of the two managers.

After initially saying that he would field his usual starting lineup for Hans Backe has stated that he will not field his strongest XI for the Cup-tie due to New York’s fixture congestion.

“If we win in the Cup” Backe told the New York Post “we would probably play nine games from today until June 5th, and I don’t think this squad is able to cope with that. So we would play mostly the players who haven’t been involved in the first five games.”

Peter Nowak thinks more on the lines of, well Peter Nowak. “Is there a trophy?” Nowak asked “then we’ll play the best players.” Simple as that.

Nowak won two US Open Cup Championships during his time with the Chicago Fire, a team that has won more open cups than any other MLS team.  A focus was put on silverware with the Fire, something he clearly wants to establish with the Philadelphia Union. Though his side are only a few weeks into their existence and this is their first ever Cup match, there are players on Union that do have Cup experience.  Danny Califf, Shavar Thomas and Fred have all won Cups before and Alejandro Moreno has seven career Open Cup goals.

The Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders both won the trophy in their inaugural seasons (1998 and 2009 respectively), a mark that Nowak is both aware of and feels he can take advantage of.  He knows that victories in any competition can build confidence in a fledgling side and give players a chance to play at the highest level away from the spotlight of being the new kids on the block.

Look for Philadelphia to play with a purpose on Tuesday Night and come out with their guns blazing.

MLS PREVIEW: FC DALLAS –SEATTLE SOUNDERS

April 22, 2010

MLS PREVIEW: FC DALLAS –SEATTLE SOUNDERS

To play an MLS match on National TV at the home of the league’s worst attended team is bad thing to do. Many empty seats in the forecast. That this match falls on a Thursday Night, makes it worse. The most frightening thing about this tie is that it is in HD.  My guess is that we will get see just how many people “…are not spectators” as the FC Dallas marketing pitch tells us.

That complaint aside, I am looking forward to an interesting match for Thursday Night Football.

Seattle is constantly being touted as the best in the West and yet what have they done to back that up this season? Whipping an expansion team at home in the season opener and getting a last gasp winner by a late substitute who is on no one’s fantasy roster (which is just down right frustrating) is no kind of way to throw down the Western Conference Gauntlet.

I know it is still early in the season, and I don’t do Power Rankings and all that, but bear with me. I put Seattle behind LA, RSL and Houston in the West right now.  All those teams have proven they can beat good sides on tough days.

Having said that there are the four other teams in the West; the bottom four, as it were.  What can we make of those teams? Enigma’s all, Chivas USA seems lost, San Jose seems bi-polar and Colorado seems consistently average.

Finally we come to FC Dallas, which team do we have in the early stages of 2010? Are they the team that looked like they were going to challenge New York for worst in the league during the early stages of 2009 or are they the team that rocketed up from the league cellar and just missed the playoffs at the end of last season?

Does FCD really look that bad this season? They are doing the right things on the pitch; Jeff Cunningham who is tied for the league lead in shots, but has only one PK goal. The service out of the midfield is there for the Texas XI, and it is possible they are more than they seem. Two draws against two of the leagues best sides in Houston and Columbus and a loss to New York at Red Bull Arena by one goal.

This game, if we are lucky, will go a long way in telling us which of these teams is what they seem and which is a pretender. Then again we are not so lucky and this match could just postpone the answer to those questions by giving us a 0-0 or a listless 1-1.

Let us make that my prediction then, yawn, hoping that I will be wrong and one of these sides will post a 4-2 win and re-introduce themselves to the league as a serious challenge.

FANTASY PICK’S TO CLICK

FC DALLAS: David Ferreira will get space and if Dallas is to be successful, he will get assists.

SEATTLE SOUNDERS: Steve Zakuani, overdue for a goal or two.

FANTASY X FACTOR: Jeff Cunningham. He may break through tonight and lord know he’ll be shooting.
