SUPERLIGA SEMIFINALS SET

Final Standings for Group Stage – Dates, Venues and TV Times for the Knockout Round

Two Mexican League teams and two Major League Soccer teams have advanced out of the group stages of the 2010 SuperLiga and will face each other on August 4 and 5.

2008 SuperLiga Champions New England Revolution were the only team to take maximum points from the group stage as well as having allowed no goals thus far in the tournament, but with only a +3 goal difference and they will be challenged by Puebla FC who have score 5 goals in their three matches.

Runners-up in the 08 edition, this years Houston Dynamo won Group A. The Texas side will be facing a powerful Morelia club that, although they only won one of their group matches, have scored 7 goals.

Both Mexican survivors are hoping to appear in their first ever SuperLiga Final, while both MLS clubs advance, the teams will compete in a rematch of the 2008 edition.

Here is the schedule for the Semifinals followed by the final group stage standings.

TV schedule will be posted when available.

2010 SUPERLIGA: WHAT TO WATCH FOR

2010 SUPERLIGA – WHAT TO WATCH FOR

FAMILIAR FOES – PACHUCA v HOUSTON

Possibly the best rivalry between an MLS club and a Mexican Club, these two have put on some of the best club matches seen on this continent in the CONCACAF Cahmpiosn League/Cup. The two sides played a memorable  SuperLiga semifinal goal fest in 2007 with the 10 man Dynamo getting a late equalizer to send the match to extra time only to see Pachuca take the match on penalties. The 2010 edition of this rivalry will be the Group A opener for both clubs. If you see only one SuperLiga match this year, make it this Thursday at Robertson Stadium.

SISTER SIDES? MORELIA v CHICAGO

The Chicago Fire and Mexican club Morelia have a sister club relationship.  They have had since 2003 and the Fire even sported Morelia colors for a few matches in the clubs 2004 MLS Season. What this relationship means, I have no idea, as the two clubs haven’t met since before the deal was made..

It was the quarterfinals of the  CONCACAF Champions Cup (Precursor to the current Champions League) in 2002 and the Fire came back in the 2nd leg of the tie at then home Cardinal Stadium in Naperville IL, only to see their efforts couldn’t stave off elimination.

So Wednesday Night the sister-clubs meet for the first time in eight years.  Outside of the Houston-Pachuca match, this may be, on paper anyway, the tie of the group stages.

INTERLIGA TO BE SCRAPPED: FMF to Free up Schedule, Streamline Qualification Process

The annual January InterLiga tournament, designed to get Mexican club teams to vie for two Copa Libertadores slots, will be scrapped according to the Mexican League Secretary General Decio De Maria.

“We have to evolve,” De Maria said in a press conference. “The [InterLiga] games were strong but they also had their drawbacks. Vacations were cut short. The two teams who got to the end got their very closely.”

MLS WEEK 7 PREVIEW

HOUSTON DYNAMO v FC DALLAS

Snakebitten. Thats FC Dallas in 2010. They have yet to win and have some bad fortune and even when they lay it on thick, as they did last week against a nine-man New England Revolution side, they can’t quite seem to break through to the positive. This will either end tonight or get worse.  It can’t help the feeling in the locker room that Dallas has never won in Houston in any competition.

SUPERLIGA: DATES AND VENUES ANNOUNCED

Major League Soccer and the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF) unveiled the dates and venues for the 2010 edition of SuperLiga on Thursday.  SuperLiga features MLS and Mexican soccer clubs and awards the winner with a big cash prize.

The four Major League Soccer teams in the 2010 Superliga qualified based on their 2009 regular season record and excluding teams already competing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.  2009 Finalists Chicago Fire will lead the MLS sides, with Chivas USA, Houston Dynamo and New England Revolution rounding out the field.

The four invited Mexican clubs have yet to be named but an announcement is expected following the conclusion of current season.

The 2010 Superliga will be the fourth consecutive year of the tournament and will be played over eight days beginning on Wednesday, July 14 at Chicago’s Toyota Park and at New England, though Gillette Stadium has yet to be confirmed as the venue. Attention then shifts west where on Thursday July 15 Houston’s Robertson Stadium and Home Depot Center, home of Chivas USA, will host matches.
