SUPERLIGA SEMIFINALS SET

Final Standings for Group Stage – Dates, Venues and TV Times for the Knockout Round

Two Mexican League teams and two Major League Soccer teams have advanced out of the group stages of the 2010 SuperLiga and will face each other on August 4 and 5.

2008 SuperLiga Champions New England Revolution were the only team to take maximum points from the group stage as well as having allowed no goals thus far in the tournament, but with only a +3 goal difference and they will be challenged by Puebla FC who have score 5 goals in their three matches.

Runners-up in the 08 edition, this years Houston Dynamo won Group A. The Texas side will be facing a powerful Morelia club that, although they only won one of their group matches, have scored 7 goals.

Both Mexican survivors are hoping to appear in their first ever SuperLiga Final, while both MLS clubs advance, the teams will compete in a rematch of the 2008 edition.

Here is the schedule for the Semifinals followed by the final group stage standings.

TV schedule will be posted when available.

2010 SUPERLIGA: WHAT TO WATCH FOR

2010 SUPERLIGA – WHAT TO WATCH FOR

FAMILIAR FOES – PACHUCA v HOUSTON

Possibly the best rivalry between an MLS club and a Mexican Club, these two have put on some of the best club matches seen on this continent in the CONCACAF Cahmpiosn League/Cup. The two sides played a memorable  SuperLiga semifinal goal fest in 2007 with the 10 man Dynamo getting a late equalizer to send the match to extra time only to see Pachuca take the match on penalties. The 2010 edition of this rivalry will be the Group A opener for both clubs. If you see only one SuperLiga match this year, make it this Thursday at Robertson Stadium.

SISTER SIDES? MORELIA v CHICAGO

The Chicago Fire and Mexican club Morelia have a sister club relationship.  They have had since 2003 and the Fire even sported Morelia colors for a few matches in the clubs 2004 MLS Season. What this relationship means, I have no idea, as the two clubs haven’t met since before the deal was made..

It was the quarterfinals of the  CONCACAF Champions Cup (Precursor to the current Champions League) in 2002 and the Fire came back in the 2nd leg of the tie at then home Cardinal Stadium in Naperville IL, only to see their efforts couldn’t stave off elimination.

So Wednesday Night the sister-clubs meet for the first time in eight years.  Outside of the Houston-Pachuca match, this may be, on paper anyway, the tie of the group stages.

US NATIONAL TEAM STOPS IN AT THE WHITE HOUSE

Bob Bradley and his 23-man US National Team stopped by the White House for a World Cup send off Thursday. The team got to meet the President and Vice President as well as Former President Bill Clinton.

AVRAM GRANT TO MANAGE WEST HAM UNITED

Many will feel that Avram Grant is a glutton for punishment. After do his best in the worst possible situation at Portsmouth, Grant will take the reigns at struggling West Ham United, replacing Gianfranco Zola in the position. Grant resigned from his post at Portsmouth after the team’s unlikely appearance in the FA Cup Final.

ESSIEN RULED OUT OF WORLD CUP

A huge blow was dealt to Ghana’s World Cup ambitions as Michael Essien was ruled out of the World Cup due to a knee injury suffered during January’s African Nations Cup. SHORT CORNERS

SHALRIE JOSEPH LEAVES REVOLUTION

Shalrie Joseph has left the New England Revolution on an indefinite leave of absence to attend to family matters, according to the team website.  The leave of absence was granted by the team and apparently has to do with matters having nothing to do with soccer.

“It’s a completely personal matter, non soccer-related,’’ said Mike Burns, Vice President of Player Personnel for the Revolution “He asked for some time on a personal matter and it was granted, and it would be speculation to say how long he will be gone.’’

HERCULES GOMEZ CLAIMS MEXICAN SCORING TITLE

For the first time in history, and American can say he is the golden Boot winner in a foreign league. More exciting is that the foreign league is the Mexican First Division.

Hercules Gomez of Puebla ended the Mexican campaign with ten goals which gives him a share of the three way tie for leading goal scorer in Mexico’s top league.  Gomez, who many are clamoring for inclusion in the United States 23-man roster ahead of this summer’s World Cup, is also being courted by many teams as his contract with Puebla is up at the end of the Mexican Playoffs.

What MLS team couldn’t use a guaranteed goal scorer that has a history and familiarity with the league? Especially a Spanish speaker of Mexican lineage. Wake up Chivas USA!

CHARLIE DAVIES RETURNS TO FULL TRAINING AT SOCHAUX

US National Team striker Charlie Davies has returned to full training at his Ligue 1 side Sochaux. The club commented last week that Davies would not see action in the remaining weeks of the French season, but Davies return to full fitness after the horrific accident he was involved in mere months ago, suggests that he will get at the least a full two weeks of first team training before the end of the season.  Best case scenario, however, is that the 23 year old will see some top flight minutes before Bob Bradley needs to make a decision regarding Davies inclusion in the 23-man squad headed for South Africa.

HOUSTON INJURY WOES CONTINUE; CAMERON OUT FOR SEASON

The Houston Dynamo  injury situation went from bad to worse on Monday, when it was reported that midfielder Geoff Cameron is out for the season after tearing his PCL on Saturday against the Chicago Fire.

BECKHAM TO MISS OUT ON 2010 SEASON

David Beckham, Major League Soccer’s first and biggest Designated Player signing will miss out on the 2010 season completely. The England super star told Good Morning America on Monday that he is aiming for a November return to fitness.

YURA SCORING IN DENMARK

Former Major League Soccer standout Yura Movsisyan continues to score for his Danish club Randers.  The Armenian forward scored both his teams goals in 12 minutes this weekend giving him 5 goals in 9 appearances for Randers who sit in 9th position in the Danish Superliga.

RUMORS…

With ‘Every Player for Sale’ at West Ham United, could Jonathon Spector be heading to Major League Soccer?

Steve Cherundolo will be in Major League Soccer come the close of the summer transfer window, according to a prediction from the valuable du Nord.  The 31 year-old has played his entire senior career at German Bundesliga side Hannover 96, making 284 appearances in over ten years.

Olof Mellburg currently of Greek powerhouse Olympiakos is the latest in the post World Cup to Red Bull rumors.
