DESIGNATED PLAYER UPDATE: KANSAS CITY SIGNS MEXICAN INTERNATIONAL OMAR BRAVO

The Kansas City Wizards have made the latest designated player coup, by signing Mexican international Omar Bravo from Guadalajara.

Bravo scored 106 goals in 290 appearances for Chivas and somehow managed to play for two seasons in Spain for Deportivo de Coruna as well. The standout striker moved back to Guadalajara in 2009 and continued to build on his reputation as a club legend.

Now the 30-year-old hopes to conquer America with his goal scoring exploits, but he will be missed by Guadalajara, as a release on the club website admitted.

“Omar Bravo is one of the greatest players of the sport in Mexico.” read the translated statement. “Now his arrival in the United States represents a major event for the growing number of football fans in that market. Thanks to the involvement of figures like Bravo in the MLS, the league becomes more exciting and each day takes on a more competitive level.”

Guadalajara owner Jorge Vergara chimed in his support as well.

“We are very proud of Omar, of everything he has accomplished and know his career will continue strong in MLS like it has been with Chivas,”  Vergara said in a news release. “We will miss Omar very much but we know he will bring much joy to fans who live in the United States, and that’s an important thing in football.”

Since the MLS Transfer window opened on Thursday a number of big names signed designated player contracts, but most were public knowledge, like DC United’s Branko Boskovic and Seattle’s Blaise Nkufo or ‘worst kept secrets’ such as Thierry Henry.

That seemed to change over the weekend as first the Chicago Fire and then the Kansas City Wizards locked up big name Mexican Internationals, with very little hype or fanfare and most fans were left to speculate on who the signings would be until the last minute.

The Fire announced the Signing of forward/midfielder Nery Castillo on Saturday at Toyota Park during a SuperLiga double header.

MLS PLAYER SIGNINGS: West Ham Bid Big Money for Thierry Henry

May 24, 2010

WEST HAM UNITED BID BIG MONEY FOR MLS TARGET THIERRY HENRY

Red Bull New York may want to delay the printing of all those Thierry Henry jersey’s they have planned. Premier League side West Ham United have put forward a huge bid in an attempt to lure the French International to London instead of New York.

“I’ve made an offer which would make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history. And it’s a serious offer because Henry could walk into almost any Premier League side.” Hammers joint chairman David Sullivan told English paper The Sun. “We’re trying to assemble a more prolific strike-force at West Ham and I’d love to have Henry here.”

The sheer magnitude of the offer from cash strapped West Ham, estimated to earn Henry over $100,000 a week, did not seem to phase Sullivan.

“Our club is in debt but a striker of his quality and standing would make it a great deal.”

Henry is reported to have signed a Pre-Contract with Major League Soccer.

FULHAM IN EUROPA LEAGUE FINAL, LIVERPOOL FALL IN SEMIFINALS

If you had bet in August that Fulham FC would be the last English team remaining in European competition this season, you would be a rich person indeed.

Fulham, powered by two late goals, pushed past Bundesliga side Hamburg Thursday Night at Craven Cottage to advance to the Europa League Finals on May 12.

Ironically, the 2010 Final will be played in Hamburg at the HSH-Nordbank Arena where Fulham managed a 0-0 draw in the first leg of the Semifinals.

Fulham will be playing Athletico Madrid who eliminated Liverpool FC and thus ended the dreams of an all-English Final.
