WEEKEND WORLD CUP WRAP

UNITED STATES WINS SEND-OFF AGAINST TURKEY

The United States won their final World Cup tune-up on home soil Saturday, coming from behind to beat Turkey in front of 55,000 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Second half goals by Altidore and Dempsey put the United States on top and capped off a thrilling final 45 minutes for the US, who trailed after Arda Turan put the Turks up in the 27th minute.

Landon Donovan set up both goals in the comeback for the US who hadn’t looked in sync in the first half.

BRADLEY TO ANNOUNCE 23-MAN US TEAM AT 1PM ET ON ESPN

United States National Team coach Bob Bradley will announce his 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup during the 1pm ET SportsCenter on ESPN.

The 23 players that have been named to the roster will be in attendance.

The United States 2010 World Cup team will them resume training at Princeton NJ ahead of Saturday’s match against Turkey at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia PA.

The team leaves for South Africa on Sunday and begins training at Irene Country Lodge between Johannesburg and Pretoria at an altitude of 4,000 ft.

The States will take on Australia in it’s final World Cup tune-up on Saturday, June 5 at Ruimsig Stadium in Roodepoort, South Africa.

Once there, the team will back off on physical prep while getting acclimated to the altitude at its Pretoria base (altitude: 4,000 feet).

SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: VALENCIA PULL OUT SUMMER TOUR, CELTIC STEPS UP

Valencia CF, who currently sit in 3rd place in the Spanish Primera División, has withdrawn from their summer tour of North America, leaving dates with DC united, New England Revolution and Philadelphia Union up in the air.

The Spanish club has given no reason for the withdrawal.

This is a double blow for DC United who also lost their July 24th date with Glasgow Rangers when the Scottish Champions pulled out of their North American tour earlier this week.

How this will affect United and New England remains to be seen, but Philadelphia Union have already filled their calendar with Scottish Super-team Glasgow Celtic.

SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: MANCHESTER UNITED v ALL-STARS KANSAS CITY AND PHILADELPHIA

Manchester United will play five matches in the United States, Mexico and Canada in July, including a showcase match with the Major League Soccer All-Star’s, in the run up to starting their 2010-11 Premier League campaign in August.

The world-famous Red Devils will begin their tour in Canada, taking on perennial Scottish power Glasgow Celtic in Toronto at Rodgers Centre.  The Friday, July 16 match will be played on an overlaid natural-grass pitch, brought in for the game. (more…)
