2010 WORLD CUP – INJURY UPDATE JUNE 14

LEDLEY KING RULED OUT OF WORLD CUP

Ledley King’s World Cup appears to be over after the England Center back injured his groin during Saturday’s draw with the United States.

The England medical team is continuing to monitor the Tottenham defender and England manager Fabio Capello’s initial comments that King’s injury would only prevent him from missing Friday’s Group C encounter with Algeria, now seem optimistic.

Capello, already dealing with the loss of Rio Ferdinand to an injury sustained in training, will be concerned about his backline’s attrition, with only Jamie Carragher, Michael Dawson and Matthew Upson remaining in his squad to partner John Terry in the heart of his defense.

2010 WORLD CUP: ENGLAND v UNITED STATES – WHAT TO WATCH FOR

BEST FINISH

England – Champions (1966)

United States – 3rd (1950)

UNITED STATES

The United States, like South Korea, Japan and Mexico are teams that are better than most in the World except maybe the top 15. The States have a solid starting XI and good subs, and even have a bit of a style and tactical acumen. None of these attributes, as any longtime fan of the United States will tell you, were present 20 years ago.

The States even have gifted individual talent in the wonderful vision of Landon Donovan, the grit of Clint Dempsey, the sheer power and finesse of Jozy Altidore and the raw speed that is present amongst so many of the forwards in the US side.

ENGLAND NAME 23-MAN ENGLAND SQUAD FOR WORLD CUP

ENGLAND have named their 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup. There
were few surprises, though West Ham United midfielder Scott Parker and
Asenal’s Theo Walcott, missed out on Fabio Capello’s 23.

Leighton Baines, Darren Bent, Michael Dawson, Tom Hudderstone and Adam
Johnson also missed out of the squad.

ENGLAND’S OFFICIAL 23-MAN ENGLAND SQUAD:
GOALKEEPERS
Rob Green – West Ham United
David James – Portsmouth
Joe Hart – Manchester City
