JULY 17: DESIGNATED PLAYER WATCH

July 17, 2010

UPDATED: DESIGNATED PLAYER WATCH

FIRE SIGN DP – MEXICAN INTERNATIONAL NERY CASTILLO

The Chicago Fire have announced the Designated Player signing of  Mexican International Nery Castillo who has been negotiating with Greek side Olympiacos, where he played from 2000-2007.

The 26-year-old Castillo, who played at Manchester City in 2008 as part of a loan deal; with his then club Shakhtar Donetsk, is a much more versatile player than Blanco.  Castillo can play up front, on the wing or can play an attacking role out of the midfield.

Castillo may be the answer to the Fire’s problems in terms of attack, but one can only hope that Carlos de los Cabos and Frank Klopas now turn their sights toward some defensive help.

The designated player announcement was made Saturday between Games 1 and 2 of the SuperLiga double header at Toyota Park.

RSL’S CHECKETTS HELPS RONALDINHO RUMOR STAY ALIVE

Checketts told radio listeners on KALL 10 Sports that he expected another big designated player signing in the league sooon, but quick assuaged people of the notion that it was a potential RSL signing.

Something to Cheer About at Eastlands

TUESDAY’S SHORT CORNERS – INTERNATIONAL SOCCER NEW, NOTES AND RUMORS

MANCHESTER CITY SPENDING SPREE LOOMING

It is getting increasingly difficult for Manchester City fans to get a handle on all the signings that MAY take place at Eastlands, as there are so many and some contradict each other.

The most recent is the long rumored signing of Yaya Toure as part of a $100 million spending spree that also includes David Silva and Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.

Toure’s move to City, which will put him on the same club as his brother Kolo, was all but confirmed by the Barcelona website.

“In the case of Toure,” the statement read “[Barcelona director-general Joan] Oliver has recognized an understanding between the club interested in the midfielder, Manchester City, and Barca, but the transfer cannot be made official yet.”

Silva is reported to be joining Toure in the midfield on the blue side of Manchester this season. The Spanish international, currently (more…)

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER RETURNS TO ACTION – MLS WEEK 13 PREVIEW

Most everyone’s eyes will be on the World Cup this weekend, and rightly so, the sheer weight of match-ups over the next four days is incredible.

Having said that, lets take a look at what we have in store for ourselves this weekend and touch on some of the stories we may have missed while over-indulging in the World Cup Garden of Eden.

PPL PARK OPENS IN PHILADELPHIA THIS SUNDAY
The Philadelphia Union fans will agree with Tom Petty, the waiting is the hardest part, but now the wait is over as Peter Nowak’s boys will christen their new home, PPL Park on Sunday against Seattle Sounders at 5pm ET. The match will be shown on ESPN2 and will see Union attempt to turn around a less than stellar Expansion campaign. Union are dead last in the East having garnered 7 points from 10 matches. Philly fans will be hoping that the League’s newest Soccer Specific gem will provide the inspiration for some points down the stretch.

SACHA KLJESTAN MOVES TO EUROPE
Belgian Champions Anderlicht acquired Chivas USA captain Sacha Kljestan during the World Cup break leaving the Goats, who are in the midst of a five game losing streak, missing some key talent.  Manager Martin Vasquez has brought for Chivas USA midfield standout Paulo Nagamura back into the side with an aim to fill the missing Kljestan’s shoes. Another help for Chivas might come in the form of Venezuelan international
Giancarlo Maldonado who is training with the team.

BLAISE NKUFO IS COMING TO SEATTLE
This deal was done early in the season, but since then we have all had a chance to see Nkufo play for Switzerland in (more…)

2010 WORLD CUP: ENGLAND v UNITED STATES – WHAT TO WATCH FOR

BEST FINISH

England – Champions (1966)

United States – 3rd (1950)

UNITED STATES

The United States, like South Korea, Japan and Mexico are teams that are better than most in the World except maybe the top 15. The States have a solid starting XI and good subs, and even have a bit of a style and tactical acumen. None of these attributes, as any longtime fan of the United States will tell you, were present 20 years ago.

The States even have gifted individual talent in the wonderful vision of Landon Donovan, the grit of Clint Dempsey, the sheer power and finesse of Jozy Altidore and the raw speed that is present amongst so many of the forwards in the US side.

WEEKEND WORLD CUP WRAP

UNITED STATES WINS SEND-OFF AGAINST TURKEY

The United States won their final World Cup tune-up on home soil Saturday, coming from behind to beat Turkey in front of 55,000 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Second half goals by Altidore and Dempsey put the United States on top and capped off a thrilling final 45 minutes for the US, who trailed after Arda Turan put the Turks up in the 27th minute.

Landon Donovan set up both goals in the comeback for the US who hadn’t looked in sync in the first half.

“We’re going to be as good as we want to be,” Donovan said. “And if we play the way we’re capable of (more…)

UNITED STATES NAMES 23-MAN ROSTER FOR 2010 WORLD CUP

Bob Bradley named his 23-man roster for the US National Team Wednesday, and there were surprises for many fans.

UNITED STATES 23-MAN ROSTER FOR THE WORLD CUP

Goalkeepers

Brad Guzan – Aston Villa

Marcus Hahnemann – Wolverhampton Wanderers

Tim Howard – Everton

Defenders

Carlos Bocanegra – Rennes

Jonathan Bornstein – Chivas USA

Steve Cherundolo – Hannover 96

Jay DeMerit – Watford

Clarence Goodson – IK Start

Oguchi Onyewu – AC Milan

Jonathan Spector – West Ham United

Midfielders

DaMarcus Beasley – Out of Contract

Michael Bradley – Borussia Monchengladbach

Ricardo Clark – Eintract Frankfurt

Landon Donovan – Los Angeles Galaxy

Maurice Edu – Glasgow Rangers

Benny Feilhaber – AGF Aarhus

Stuart Holden – Bolton Wanderers

Jose Francisco Torres- CF Pachuca

Forwards

Jozy Altidore – Villarreal

Edson Buddle – Los Angeles Galaxy

Clint Dempsey – Fulham FC

Robbie Findley – Real Salt Lake

Herculez Gomez – CF Pachuca

The most glaring was the omission of Brian Ching. An established, experience striker, Ching was healthy and performing well in camp, but the decision was to go with Findley who is neither established nor experienced at this level. Though recovering from hamstring problems, Ching looked a bright spot in the Tuesday night match against the Czech Republic.

Findley is a quality player and can olnly get experience at the top level by playing at the top level. He has, no doubt, been brought in to replace some of the speed the team lost when it lost Charlie Davies

MLS WEEK 7 PREVIEW

COLORADO RAPIDS v LOS ANGELES GALAXY

Can anyone beat Buddle? Does anyone doubt Donovan? We will find out come Wednesday night if there is anyone that does, because this just might be the match the Galaxy drop. Make no mistake this is a game the Galaxy could lose.

A few reasons to back that claim up, one is that Colorado hasn’t lost at home yet this season. More than this the Galaxy struggle at Dick’s, they have yet to win there and have only scored once when visiting the Rapids. Worse they seem to have leaked goals in those appearances.

Let’s be honest, those were different Galaxy teams.

FANTASY UPDATE- ROOKIES THAT WILL GET YOU POINTS

FANTASY UPDATE- THE ROOKIES THAT WILL GET YOU POINTS

Rookies are cheap and make your fantasy bench look colorful, they fill in roster spots while taking up a small amount of salary cap space.  But what if there were a few who could return on investment or even… Gasp… get you serious points?

Here is the class of the 2010 Class

Danny Mwanga
Forward
Philadelphia Union
Quite a bit of pressure on this kid as there is on the entire Union team. He was the number one overall pick in the 2010 SuperDraft and he’ll be thrown into a Philadelphia bunch that will have many holes to fill.  There will be growing pains in for Peter Nowak’s bunch and I think Mwanga will start, get minutes and score.

Fantasy Fact: He counts as a foreign player

Tony Tchani
Midfielder
New York Red Bulls
This Cameroonian talent played for Virginia and went number two overall in the draft. He may find work in what last season was a woeful mid-field.  I don’t see him starting right away, but he will log minutes as the season goes on.

Fantasy Fact: He counts as a foreign player and he does a lot of the toiling midfield work that doesn’t show up on the score sheet

Ike Opara
Defender
San Jose Earthquakes
I never have a handle on what Frank Yallop is doing, but I find it hard to believe that Opara won’t walk into the non-existent San Jose back line and instantly make it better.  Taken number three overall and the first defender selected in the SuperDraft, Ike is a big and talented kid. I think the ACC Defensive Player of the year in 2008 and 2009 will be up to the challenge of MLS attackers and is a no brainer to start on Bay Side, but tell that to Frank Yallop.  This kid may be a future back line man for the United States.

Fantasy Fact: Opara didn’t play a whole heckuva lot in preaseason, not sure if there is an injury concern or again the mystical Frank Yallop.

Teal Bunbury
Forward
Kansas City Wizards
Taken fourth overall Bunbury has everything he needs to be a future star in Major League Soccer, he is likely to be called in to play for Canada any day now and in addition to being Generation Adidas, he is the first second generation MLS player as his father Alex played in the league.  My problem with the young Canadian is that he had the misfortune of being drafted into a team that has a load of talent up that Perter Vermes brought in special to get some needed goals, not sure if he’ll get the minutes.

Fantasy Fact: Canadians don’t count as foreigners!

Zach Lyod
Defender
FC Dallas
Loyd is expected to step right in to the FCD defense and contribute. He left them stunned at the MLS Combine and he is versatile and may even be more comfortable at defensive midfield than on the backline, but that is where he will play for the Hoops.  Many have their eye on this former Tar Heel standout to be Rookie of the Year.

Fantasy Fact: Loyd’s versatility may provide him with a chance to collect more minutes and starts than your average rookie

Jack McInerney
Forward
Philadelphia Union
Peter Nowak likes this kid, he is a hard worker and only 17 years old.  He has a stunning 11 goals in 15 appearances for the US U-17 team, but I am not sure how many minutes young Jack will get.

Fantasy Fact: I see Jack Mac as a super sub, he may get points but coming in late when the Union needs a lift.

Zach Schilawski
Forward
New England Revolution
The Revolution love drafting from Wake Forest and though other teams have begun to catch on to New England’s little secret, Steve Nichol and co. may have picked the one Demon Deacon who can provide them with goals right out of the gate.

Fantasy Fact: Remember Noonan? This kid might have a points per salary ratio on par with him.

Michael Stephens
Midfield
Los Angeles Galaxy
The word from Galaxy camp is that this Chicago Fire Premier product fits right in to the needs of the team. He was a standout player in an always standout UCLA program.  He can play on the flanks or in the middle of the park and has done just that in the preseason.  I didn’t think he could see minutes in such a clogged midfield but as the preseason progressed he earned the plaudits of Bruce Arena and Landon Donovan and really, that’s all I needed to hear. Stephens is having a phenomenal spring and there is talk of him becoming the Galaxy’s third rookie of the year in a row.

Fantasy Fact: Stephens will likely see minutes in every game. His versatility can provide a 70th minute answer to any number of aged Galaxy midfielders, he will see minutes and when he does he will get points

Tim Ream
Defender
New York Red Bulls
Ream is my early pick for Rookie of the Year.  Though he was a 2nd round pick, he will come into a rebuilt Red Bull team and share the center of the defense with Mike Petke, who can only serve to make the kid better.  I think he will start and that this New New York team will get goals and keep clean sheets. Besides Tim played for the Chicago Fire Premier and you how much love I have for that organization.

Fantasy Fact: Ream will start and play 90 right from jump street
