UNITED IN FOR BALOTELLI?

The Agent for Italian striker Mario Balotelli has confirmed that red sides of Manchester is interested in the 19-year-old’s services.

Inter Milan still has the player under wraps for three more seasons but for the proposed $50million price tag, the club could be persuaded to let him go, according to the players agent Mino Raiola who is heading to England to begin negotiations.

“The interest of Manchester for Balotelli is concrete and both clubs have confirmed it,” Raiola told Calcio Mercato. “The player is clearly happy to be followed by [Manchester United coach Sir Alex] Ferguson.”

The petulant striker clashed with then Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho, but new manager Rafael Benitez wants to meet and evaluate the player before letting him go.

“I want to speak to him and get to know him better as a person.” Benitez said. “All the quality players are important to me. But I need to see him, get to know him and see how he works.”

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti thinks that Manchester United would be an ideal fit for the Italian sensation.

“They are a team with great tradition, which helps that type of player,” he told Sky Sport24. “Here, the environment is different and I think a player with his character could find it better than in Italy. It’s difficult to find a player so young with his quality, and England has a lack of players at that level.”

Ancelotti mentioned he would be happy to coach a player like Balotelli.

FABIANO LOOKS TO MAN U AND MILAN

Luis Fabiano has already netted twice for Brazil in the 2010 World Cup, but the Seville striker has made it known he is looking to leave Sevilla for a big club with a chance at some silverware, and he wants it all to happen rather quickly.

“As soon as the World Cup is over I will make a quick decision on my future – and while it is going on I hope Sevilla can open discussions.” Fabiano told the Daily Star Sunday. “I have enjoyed my time here but I now need to be at a giant.”

“I have a real chance of winning a World Cup here in South Africa, and that is what I must stay focused on even though I know my future has to be sorted soon. I have made it clear that I will not be signing a new contract with Sevilla and at 29 I now need to join a club where I can start challenging for the highest honors from the first season.

“The choice will come down to Manchester United and AC Milan. That is the sort of team I want to be signing for, one of the true giants of Europe. I think the way Manchester United play football is very attractive, I must be honest and say Premier League football attracts me and also the way Manchester United play football attracts me.”

“You think about being Wayne Rooney’s strike partner and that is very attractive for any striker. I think the style of Premier League football suits me and I think I could score goals and be very successful there. Their coach is a winner, their players are winners and they are one of the few teams in Europe challenging for the top honors season after season.”

The Brazilian also made clear the type of club he won’t be playing for.

“I have heard Tottenham Hotspur made an inquiry about me but, with all respect, that is not somewhere I am going to be able to win the Premier League (more…)

REAL MADRID TO OFFER $162 MILLION FOR ROONEY, GERRARD

The Galacticos look poised to return to the European scene if reports regarding a double swoop for Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard are to be believed.

Gerrard has been targeted by Jose Mourinho’s side after a particularly frustrating season at Liverpool which saw the Anfield club finished in seventh place and thus well out of a Champions League spot.

A report in the Daily Star, however, asserts that Real are now also contemplating a move for Manchester United star Wayne Rooney. Mourinho admitted he would like to coach Rooney, and president Florentino Perez is prepared to make his dream come true. It is believed Madrid would (more…)

RAFA BACKS DALGLISH FOR LIVERPOOL

Rafa Benitez may be gone from Liverpool, but he has an opinion on who his replacement should be.

The newly installed Inter Milan boss thinks former Liverpool star Kenny Dalglish should succeed him at Anfield when he spoke to the Italian media in his first press conference at Inter.

“I think they should look at Kenny Dalglish,” Benitez said. “He is the best man for the job. The owners should listen to the fans because they are unhappy.

“No one knows the club better than Dalglish, and he wants the job and in my opinion he should get it.”

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson is the bookmaker favorite to get the Liverpool job, though former England manager and current Ivory Coast manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has also throw his hat in the ring.

INJURED STARS DOWN, BUT NOT OUT
There may be good news for some of the high profile players at the 2010 World Cup who were injured over the weekend and some may even be able to play in the tournament.

Netherlands forward Arjen Robben is planning to travel to South Africa in hopes of joining his Dutch teammates. The Bayern Munich star has a small tear in his left hamstring but is hoping intense physiotherapy will help him take part in South Africa.

Speaking after his first session, Robben told reporters “It is impossible to say whether that (a return) will only be about four days or a week away. It was tedious exercises. But we will do everything to
get fit. I’m very hopeful.”

Meanwhile, Didier Drogba has undergone successful surgery on his broken arm and was due to link up with his Ivory Coast teammates yesterday.

LIVERPOOL SACK RAFA BENITEZ

June 2, 2010

"... Milan is this way, is it?"

LIVERPOOL SACK RAFA BENITEZ

Liverpool have bought out the remainder of their contract with manager Rafael Benitez, essentially sacking the man who had managed the club since 2004, according to multiple sources.

Benitez’s stock had plummeted dramatically in recent years and rumors circulated wildly on Merseyside that Rafa was on his way out, but when he recently turned down the Juventus opening, it seemed like he would be back managing the team he made Champions League Winners for another season.

The original 5-year contract, signed just 12 months ago, stipulated that Benitez would be due $23.5 million if his contract was terminated, but the Anfield club worked with their manager of the past six years for a mutually agreeable compensation. A move which might imply that Benitez already has a job lined up.

The most likely scenario involves the position at Inter Milan, which was recently vacated by Jose Mourinho when he left the San Siro to take over as Real Madrid manager.

Benitez was bought out to the tune of $4.3 million, freeing the Spanish manager to take over at Inter Milan.

ROSSI LEFT OFF ITALY WORLD CUP SQUAD

New Jersey born Giuseppe Rossi was left off the Italian National Team’s 23-man World Cup roster. The 23-year-old Villareal striker was omitted from Marcelo Lippi’s squad in an announcement made Tuesday.

Scoring 33 goals in 91 appearances for his club side always insured Rossi a call-up to the national team where he has scored 3 times in 14 appearances for the Azzurri, since his debut in 2008.

Though a product of the United States, Rossi represented Italy at every youth level from U-16 through U-21 and was viewed as having a good shot at making the 23-man team.

JOSE MOURINHO OFFICIALLY BECOMES REAL MADRID BOSS

Jose Mourinho was unveiled Monday as the new manager of super club Real Madrid, becoming the teams ninth manager in 6 years. Needless to say, the ‘Special One’ referred to himself quit a bit in his debut press conference.

“I don’t know if I was born to coach Real Madrid but I was born to be a football coach.” Mourinho said at the press conference. “I love important challenges. I am Jose Mourinho and I don’t change. I arrive with all my qualities and my defects.

“My attraction to Real Madrid is due to its history, its frustrations in recent years and its expectations to win. It’s a unique club and I believe that not to coach Real leaves a void in a coach’s career. Luckily, I’ve had a beautiful career and it makes me proud to have come here.”

REAL MADRID SACK PELLEGRINI TO MAKE WAY FOR MOURINHO

Real Madrid have sacked manager Manuel Pellegrini who lead the team to their largest points total ever in a season.

Though Madrid racked up points, they failed to win any silverware in the year Pellegrini was in charge, even though the team spent $308 on the likes of Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema  and Xabi Alonso.  Worse, Madrid fans had to stand by and watch Barcelona win a second consecutive league title as well as snatching up a domestic treble in 2009.

This move, however, is less about Pellegrini’s performance as it is about clearing the way for the Special One who is set to arrive any day now.

The Portuguese superstar coach has agreed in principal with Real Madrid to coach the team to the tune of  $12 million per year for four years. This would make him the highest-grossing coach/manager in all of sports.

It will certainly be Jose Mourinho’s biggest challenge yet. Real Madrid, a team that thrives on ego is about to learn the definition of the word.

Inter Milan won the 2010 Champions League Final in Madrid on Saturday calmly and confidently, emulating their manager Jose Mourinho, by beating Bayern Munich 2-0 and thus claiming their first European title in 45 years.

The win over Munich was powered by Diego Milito who scored both goals for Inter in the 35th and 70th minute. “Il Principe” Milito’s composure, confidence and skill personified Inter’s play and he walked away with a deserved Man of the Match award.

Though Bayern had chances, they never looked like challenging after Milito’s first strike and Inter Milan were happy to pack the back and keep ten men behind the ball at all times.

SHALRIE JOSEPH LEAVES REVOLUTION

Shalrie Joseph has left the New England Revolution on an indefinite leave of absence to attend to family matters, according to the team website.  The leave of absence was granted by the team and apparently has to do with matters having nothing to do with soccer.

“It’s a completely personal matter, non soccer-related,’’ said Mike Burns, Vice President of Player Personnel for the Revolution “He asked for some time on a personal matter and it was granted, and it would be speculation to say how long he will be gone.’’

HERCULES GOMEZ CLAIMS MEXICAN SCORING TITLE

For the first time in history, and American can say he is the golden Boot winner in a foreign league. More exciting is that the foreign league is the Mexican First Division.

Hercules Gomez of Puebla ended the Mexican campaign with ten goals which gives him a share of the three way tie for leading goal scorer in Mexico’s top league.  Gomez, who many are clamoring for inclusion in the United States 23-man roster ahead of this summer’s World Cup, is also being courted by many teams as his contract with Puebla is up at the end of the Mexican Playoffs.

What MLS team couldn’t use a guaranteed goal scorer that has a history and familiarity with the league? Especially a Spanish speaker of Mexican lineage. Wake up Chivas USA!

US National Team striker Charlie Davies has returned to full training at his Ligue 1 side Sochaux. CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: DID INTER MILAN DO ENOUGH AT HOME?

April 22, 2010

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMIFINALS

The First Legs of the Champions League semifinals are in the book, and though we some spectacular individual skill and brilliant tactical football, these two ties are far from over.  In reality, all four teams will have a reason to think the tie is theirs to win come next week.

DID INTER MILAN DO ENOUGH AT HOME?

Tuesday saw Inter Milan do what no one seems to have been able to do lately and that is to stop the outright onslaught that is FC Barcelona.  For all the self-love that exudes from Jose Mourinho and all the press he gets (good and bad) we sometimes forget that he is a brilliant tactician and manager. His strategy Tuesday at the San Siro, frustrated and slowed the impossibly quick defending champions to a normal pace.  He forced them to play football, which is something few understand as well as he does.  Pep Guardiola likes to let his team run and once they find their stride, they will run you into the ground and have you playing from behind.

Arsene Wenger saw this in the quarterfinals when in the first 20 minutes of the first leg. His Arsenal side could have been well and truly out of the tie. Fortune and the fact that Arsenal is a fast and free team also, helped save them and challenge Barcelona at their own game.  It didn’t work at the end of the day, as no team in the world right now is as good as Barcelona at that style.

It looked as if we were in for more of the same on Tuesday when Pedro scored for Barca inside of the 20 minute mark. Pedro has scored a goal in six (yes, that’s right… SIX) different competitions this season for Barcelona, and the goal Tuesday was his 20th of this, his first season.

Wesley Sniedjer equalized for Inter 10 minutes later and suddenly Barcelona slowed down a bit to settle into a football match.  That was a mistake

Inter continued to try and slow down Barcelona.  Ball possession, ball control and some fortune from the referees helped The Special One’s side regain a firm footing in the match, and eventually when the teams were both playing the same game, Inter took over.

Maicon’s Second Half goal was set up by the hard working Diego Milito and then Milito himself scored. the Argentine being the beneficiary of a blown offsides call.

Too late, Barcelona started attempting to ratchet up the pressure to counter the 3-1 scoreline, but Inter held fast against seemingly overwhelming Barca pressure. The score line became a result and Inter had claimed a famous victory, but was it enough to secure the tie

Barca are surely capable of outscoring anyone at the Camp Nou, so will Pep Guardiola  unleash the hounds?  Send everyone forward and try to get the goals back in front of their rabid fans? Perhaps Barca will sacrifice some of their offensive prowess in lieu of keeping Inter off the score sheet and thereby keeping the vital away goal out of Jose Mourinho’s reach.

Regardless, everything is left to play for next Wednesday in Barcelona.

SOCCER ON THE BOX: THE MID-WEEK

April 20, 2010

SOCCER ON THE BOX: THE MID-WEEK

It is impossible to escape the majesty of the knock out rounds of UEFA Champions League.  Every week we are treated to some of the best the sport has to offer.  Intelligent, quick and gifted players giving us sweeping challenges and magical goals. History, tension, passion and the beautiful game. The impossible match-ups that seem like they can only take place in a video game, but happen in front of your eyes every Tuesday and Wednesday.  A sort of weekly World Cup every spring, there is nothing like it, and this Tuesday will be no exception.

Defending Champions Barcelona are the best team on the planet in the past month or so, no team has been able to slow them down whether in La Liga or Champions League. They are the team that has it all, except of course the self proclaimed Special One: José Mourinho.

No Mourinho is not with Barca, he is the manager of Inter Milan, the team charged with stopping Barcelona in the semi-finals of this seasons Champions League which begin on Tuesday. No slouches themselves, Inter Milan are winners of the Italian Serie A four years running and have a very strong chance of making it five. The Special One, however will have his hands full on Tuesday, for Barca does not just have it all, it has it all and Lionel Messi the most entrancing player alive.

Lionel Messi  is riding the crest of a run of form that seems against all reason.  Many of us, in the years to come, will be attempting to explain Messi’s current form to those who hadn’t paid attention. Pay attention.
