FIFA WORLD CUP TIE-BREAKING RULES

If two teams are tied after 90 minutes

If a match is tied after 90 minutes of play…

Extra Time

  • Two 15-minute periods is are played with a five minute half time played between each.
  • If the teams are still tied after the 30 extra minutes the match will be decided by penalty kicks.

Penalty Kicks

  • The winning team is the team that has the most converted Penalty Kicks after 5 attempts.
  • If the teams have the same number of converted Penalties after 5 attempts, the the teams will continue taking one penalty each until one team wins.

NOTE: There is no ‘Sudden Death’ or ‘Golden Goal’ or ‘Silver Goal’ in the 2010 FIFA World Cup
