ESPN2 to provide 24 straight hours of World Cup Pre-game

World Cup coverage will start a day early on ESPN2, next week as the channel will be offering a 24 hour pregame. That is straight World Cup coverage, discussion, documentaries, interviews and even a concert featuring the Black Eyed Peas and Shakira. Well done ESPN2.

MLS in talks with cable channel Versus

Major League Soccer’s deal with Fox Soccer Channel is up at the end of this season and league officials have met with exec’s from Comcast owned sports network Versus. It is certainly to early to tell if MLS is courting other broadcast partners to influence later negotiations with Fox, which currently has rights to MLS games as well as matches organized by the MLS owned Soccer United Marketing, or to discuss Versus’ strategy for development of the MLS and it’s broadcasts. Versus has certainly done a very good job for the NHL in a similar capacity. We shall see.

Soccer on TV this weekend

Certainly the match that has everyone excited, is the final tune-up for the US national team ahead of next week’s World Cup Group C opener against England on June 12.

Saturday morning’s match against Australia on ESPN2 / Galavision should be more than a final dress rehearsal for the side, it should be a good chance to see how the US’s Ultimate XI looks over 90 minutes.

In MLS action, DC and RSL renew the extra time US Open Cup thriller from Wednesday night, with RSL hoping for a different (more…)

SOCCER ON THE BOX – Soccer on TV this Week

The big match of this mid-week is the US against the Czech Republic tonight. With Bob Bradley set to name his 23-man World Cup Roster tomorrow, this match will be the last chance for many of the bubble players in the United States 30-man camp. Previews for the US v Czech Republic match can be found here.

Mexico keeps up it’s intense World Cup preparations Wednesday as they take on the Netherlands in Germany. Mexico’s build up schedule has been packed with matches (this will be El Tri’s 6th match in May), and yet it still seems Javier Aguirre still seems unsure of the direction he wants this team to take. The Dutch, on the other hand haven’t played a match since the March encounter with the United States.

Amidst a few intriguing World Cup tune-up matches this week, don’t overlook the domestic game. Chicago Fire v FC Dallas should provide an intriguing encounter on the Major League Soccer schedule. the match, on ESPN2 Thursday Night, features two teams that face more questions than answers going into Week 10.

SOCCER ON THE BOX: Soccer on TV this Weekend

It’s really a can’t miss weekend on the box. MLS Week 9, Summer Friendlies, International Friendlies, the 2nd Leg of Mexican League Final.

Oh, and did I mention the 2010 Champions League Final featuring Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan up against Bayern Munich, managed by the ‘Special One’s’ former mentor, Louis Van Gaal’s. There is no shortage of drama surrounding this Final, taking place on a Saturday for the first time in the history of the competition. It really is must see TV for any fan of the game, and a (more…)

SHORT CORNERS – SOCCER NEWS, NOTES AND RUMORS

BOB BRADLEY TO NAME PRELIMINARY 30-MAN ROSTER FOR 2010 WORLD CUP TODAY

US Soccer and Head coach Bob Bradley will name his preliminary 30-man roster for the United States Camp leading up to World Cup 2010 in South Africa next month. only 23 of the 30 will make the trip, but the 23 must be from the 30 player pool.

The selection of the 30-man pool will air today at 2pm ET / 11am PT on ESPN2.

Rumors abound that both Brian Ching and Edson Buddle will be among those called in but the wires have been mum regarding Charlie Davies who is on the mend after a car crash in October and Herculez Gomez who has had a rebirth in the Mexican League.

Here is how the Experts see it unfolding

US SOCCER TO FORMALLY SUBMIT WORLD CUP BID FOR 2018-2022

The United States will officially become a bidder for either the 2018 or 2022 World Cup’s on Friday when a delegation from US Soccer will formally hand over it’s Bid Book to FIFA at a ceremony in Zurich on Friday. No nation can match the United States on Stadium capacity and readiness.  The 18 host city finalists feature 21 venues that are all in compliance with FIFA standards and all have average capacities of more than 76,000. 12 of the stadiums feature capacities between 75,000 and 94,000. With the opening of new Meadowlands Stadium last Friday, all 21 of the stadiums included in the United States bid  are already functioning with 18 having been built in the last 20 years.

SOCCER ON THE BOX – YOUR TV WEEKEND

The Premiership comes to a close on Sunday, and barring some kind of disaster for Chelsea, the title will go to the Blues. Tottenham has locked up 4th place and the final Champions League spot and can even seize 3rd place from Arsenal with a win on Sunday and a Gunner loss at Europa Cup Finalists Fulham at the Emirates. The rest of the drama has been sorted, even the relegation battles.

More exciting is the Championship Promotion Playoffs, the 1st Legs of which take place this weekend.  Frustratingly the Sunday match between Leicester City and Cardiff City doesn’t seem to be available to watch anywhere in the States (If I find out any information regarding this I will post it as soon as possible). The Saturday match featuring Blackpool hosting Nottingham Forest will be shown on Fox Soccer Plus, and if you can watch it, I wholeheartedly recommend doing just that. I strongly believe that the promotion playoffs are the last remnants of truly English Football, something that gets lost in the Premier League.  The playoffs are always entertaining for the neutral and nerve-racking for the fan of any club involved. The prize? Playing in the most entertaining, powerful, lucrative and renowned leagues on the planet, in any sport.

There is a shinny trophy and a truck-load of cash too.

SOCCER ON THE BOX THIS WEEKEND

Another full slate of eight MLS matches on one day. Who would have thought that back in 1996? Quite a few fascinating fixtures in store for the MLS viewer this week, which is must see TV?

Can Seattle-Columbus be an MLS Cup Preview? Chicago-Chivas and Houston-Kansas City could also be fun.

Virtually every European League is involved in a tight race at the top, there really is no one fixture that stands out above the rest, but for those of you that get Fox Soccer Channel Plus, don’t miss Liverpool-Chelsea on Sunday. Can Liverpool at least play the role of spoiler without bungling it? Man City-Aston Villa could have something to say about the final Champions League spot.

In Mexico, the Playoffs begin this weekend, so… um… yeah, you’re right, just tune in for the Final in a few weeks. No. I kid. Check the Morelia-Chivas for some high-fouling fun and speaking of fouls. Twenty-two year old American Jose Francisco Torres will be on display for Pachuca versus Monterrey. Torres and Pachuca have just won their third CONCACAF Crown in four years. You may as well watch, someone has to and it’s not likely to be Bob Bradley (zing!).

SOCCER ON THE BOX THIS WEEKEND: IT’S ALL TO PLAY FOR FOR THE LAST CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SPOT

April 23, 2010

SOCCER ON THE BOX THIS WEEKEND

A few weeks ago Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool all had a shot at winning the coveted fourth place spot in the Premier League and thus securing the final Champions League slot. With all that European money and prestige on the line it is no wonder that the battle for the spot was so fierce.

It was Man City’s spot to lose, Liverpool had clearly fallen off the pace and Tottenham? Well Spurs schedule for the run in was going to be tough, maybe even impossible. They had to play all of the big three teams beginning with the North London Derby and the hated Arsenal. Spurs came away victorious and then played Chelsea as well as anyone has this season beating them too. It is now City that trail Spurs by 2 points. This weekend will see the final installment of the trilogy as Saturday morning brings us Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United on ESPN2 as our match of the week, with an honorable mention going to Arsenal v Manchester City on Fox Soccer Channel. Will this weekend decide both the Premiership title AND the Champions League spot? Doubtful as Manchester United can lose the title by losing to Spurs but Chelsea is unlikely to drop points while hosting Stoke on Sunday (also on FSC). In terms of the Champions League slot, regardless of the outcomes on Saturday Spurs and City must still play each other on Wednesday May 5, which could well and truly wrap up fourth position.

The Birmingham Derby, usually must see TV in it’s own right, is unfortunately on Fox Soccer Plus and thus not readily available.

I hope you have the Direct Kick package, because that is where all the action is at this weekend in Major League Soccer.

When Fox Soccer Channel was picking it’s match for this weekend, how did it overlook Columbus v Real Salt Lake? What a battle these two teams had over two legs in the first round of the playoffs last season. they are both thought of as the class of the league, though Columbus has already had two bye weeks and RSL has had to play a very tough opening schedule.  Chicago Houston would have been a great call too and the LA Galaxy going to KC also would have been something to see. Red Bull at Union was snapped up by TeleFutura and would be a tasty treat if TeleFutura’s coverage wasn’t so whack.  FSC brings us Chivas USA v San Jose Earthquakes. Sometimes I think the Fox Soccer Channel pick an inordinate amount of matches at the Home Depot Center because they just don’t like to travel.

MLS PREVIEW: FC DALLAS –SEATTLE SOUNDERS

April 22, 2010

MLS PREVIEW: FC DALLAS –SEATTLE SOUNDERS

To play an MLS match on National TV at the home of the league’s worst attended team is bad thing to do. Many empty seats in the forecast. That this match falls on a Thursday Night, makes it worse. The most frightening thing about this tie is that it is in HD.  My guess is that we will get see just how many people “…are not spectators” as the FC Dallas marketing pitch tells us.

That complaint aside, I am looking forward to an interesting match for Thursday Night Football.

Seattle is constantly being touted as the best in the West and yet what have they done to back that up this season? Whipping an expansion team at home in the season opener and getting a last gasp winner by a late substitute who is on no one’s fantasy roster (which is just down right frustrating) is no kind of way to throw down the Western Conference Gauntlet.

I know it is still early in the season, and I don’t do Power Rankings and all that, but bear with me. I put Seattle behind LA, RSL and Houston in the West right now.  All those teams have proven they can beat good sides on tough days.

Having said that there are the four other teams in the West; the bottom four, as it were.  What can we make of those teams? Enigma’s all, Chivas USA seems lost, San Jose seems bi-polar and Colorado seems consistently average.

Finally we come to FC Dallas, which team do we have in the early stages of 2010? Are they the team that looked like they were going to challenge New York for worst in the league during the early stages of 2009 or are they the team that rocketed up from the league cellar and just missed the playoffs at the end of last season?

Does FCD really look that bad this season? They are doing the right things on the pitch; Jeff Cunningham who is tied for the league lead in shots, but has only one PK goal. The service out of the midfield is there for the Texas XI, and it is possible they are more than they seem. Two draws against two of the leagues best sides in Houston and Columbus and a loss to New York at Red Bull Arena by one goal.

This game, if we are lucky, will go a long way in telling us which of these teams is what they seem and which is a pretender. Then again we are not so lucky and this match could just postpone the answer to those questions by giving us a 0-0 or a listless 1-1.

Let us make that my prediction then, yawn, hoping that I will be wrong and one of these sides will post a 4-2 win and re-introduce themselves to the league as a serious challenge.

FANTASY PICK’S TO CLICK

FC DALLAS: David Ferreira will get space and if Dallas is to be successful, he will get assists.

SEATTLE SOUNDERS: Steve Zakuani, overdue for a goal or two.

FANTASY X FACTOR: Jeff Cunningham. He may break through tonight and lord know he’ll be shooting.
