DESIGNATED PLAYER UPDATE: LJUNGBERG DRAMA

DESIGNATED PLAYER UPDATE: LJUNGBERG DRAMA

If, early in this 2010 Major League Soccer campaign, I told you a Seattle Sounders standout was discontented and looking to be transfered, you would have assumed I meant Fredy Montero.  The Colombian 23-year-old was visibly not interested on the field, while off the field rumors were circulate about a move to European club.

Now, approaching the midway point in the season, the Sounder most likely to want out of Seattle is designated player Freddie Ljungberg. The rumors are raging that Ljungberg is back in Sweden, and there is growing concern that he is not returning.

A move back to a European club is possible, as is a potential move to New York. If the Red Bulls are unsuccessful in landing Barcelona’s Mexican international midfielder Rafael Marquez, they may look to grab Freddie as quickly as they can.  New York boss Hans Backe is a big fan of Ljungberg and has made no secret of the fact.

Where the 33-year-old will end up is only half speculation.  What is more intriguing is how we got to this point.

Ljungberg practiced with the team last week, but didn’t play against FC Dallas, and didn’t make the trip to DC for Thursday Night’s showdown with United. In reality, (more…)

SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: REAL SALT LAKE TO HOST PUNTARENAS

June 11, 2010

REAL SALT LAKE TO HOST COSTA RICAN SIDE PUNTARENAS

Real Salt Lake is one of the few Major League Soccer teams to have been quite on the Summer Friendly front, until now.

The defending MLS Cup Champions have added a match with Costa Rican side Puntarenas FC. The match, to be played on June 19 at Rio Tinto Stadium, will be used to prepare the team for CONCACAF Champions Cup action.

Having qualified directly into the Group Stages of the tournament, RSL will not see action until mid-August but the June match against Puntarenas will still serve as a warm-up.

“On the heels of some outstanding international games in 2009, we are looking to take the next step forward as a club and establish ourselves not just as MLS champions, but as a regional powerhouse in 2010,” said General Manager Garth Lagerwey. “In order to accomplish that we must succeed in the CONCACAF Champions League. We are excited to host Puntarenas for this match, as they are precisely the type of opponent we will face later this fall.”

TORONTO FC WIN CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

Toronto FC were not even in action tonight, but the Reds secured their second straight Nutrilite Canadian Championship.

Vancouver Whitecaps needed to secure a win at Montreal against the Impact tonight in order to stay alive in the NCC.

The two sides played a listless first half in front of 11,000 fans at Saputo Stadium, but the ‘Caps came out blazing in the second half getting a goal from Ansu Toure in the 50th minute. Vancouver seemed a new team.

NUTRILITE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP-WEEK 5 PREVIEW

Montreal Impact have a chance to play spoiler for the Vancouver Whitecaps Nutrilite Canadian Championship dreams for the second straight year.

In the final match of the 2009 NCC Montreal played what amounts to a youth side and was punished by Toronto FC who need a lopsided win to secure the title from Vancouver.

In 2010 Montreal, who is already eliminated from the competition, will have to play spoiler by action as opposed to inaction, as Vancouver needs the maximum points from Wednesday Nights visit to Saputo Stadium in order to set up a chance to win the Voyageurs Cup next week in Toronto.

The now legendary story of the 09 NCC seems to be a demon that permeates every article and conversation regarding the NCC, but hopefully, one way or the other, that demon will be exorcised Wednesday Night in Quebec.

What Impact manager Marc dos Santos will do with his lineups is a mystery.

NUTRILITE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP-WEEK 4 PREVIEW-Vancouver Look to Stay Alive at Home

Toronto FC has their 2010 Nutrilite Canadian Championship destiny in their hands this week. A win against Vancouver Whitecaps at rainy Swangard Stadium Wednesday Night will give the Reds the tournament with two games yet to play.

The shoe is on the other foot for the Whitecaps. With three points, Vancouver will live to fight another day. Or at least die another day, as they must take maximum points in their final three matches. The ‘Caps must play like they have nothing to loose.

“It’s a do or die game basically,” Whitecaps keeper Jay Nolly told CTV. ”We know we need a win or a tie to keep going. They know if they get a win it’s all over.”

“We’re not afraid of them,” said ‘Caps forward Marcus Haber. “We’re confident in our own abilities and we’re not going to worry about them too much. We’re just going to focus on ourselves.”

Three consecutive draws at home will hurt a teams confidence though, especially when one of those matches were to Montreal in Week 2 of the NCC. A match that, if won, would have changed the face of the tournament and given Vancouver a little breathing room.

INTERLIGA TO BE SCRAPPED: FMF to Free up Schedule, Streamline Qualification Process

The annual January InterLiga tournament, designed to get Mexican club teams to vie for two Copa Libertadores slots, will be scrapped according to the Mexican League Secretary General Decio De Maria.

“We have to evolve,” De Maria said in a press conference. “The [InterLiga] games were strong but they also had their drawbacks. Vacations were cut short. The two teams who got to the end got their very closely.”

NUTRILITE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP: D-RO GOAL ELIMINATES IMPACT

NUTRILITE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP: DE ROSARIO’S GOAL ELIMINATES IMPACT

It was a huge week for Montreal. The Impact were named Major League Soccer’s 19th team and the Canadians ousted the defending champions from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but one mission that was just beyond the city’s reach was an Impact victory over Toronto FC.

Dwayne De Rosario ended that dream with a second half strike. Nick LaBracca bounced a well-slotted through ball into on form Chad Barrett. Impact ‘keeper Matt Jordan made a diving save but the rebound fell just right for De Rosario who buried the nights only goal. A goal, in the 73rd minute, that gave Toronto FC their first road win in any competition this season.

NUTRILITE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP – WEEK 3 PREVIEW

Montreal Impact host Toronto FC at Saputo Stadium in the Week 3 of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship Wednesday Night. The match couldn’t get much tougher for the home team

The match will be the third in three weeks for the Impact in the NCC, and their North American Soccer League schedule hasn’t slowed at all during the competition. Montreal has managed a 2-1-1 record in the league with 7 points so far. It wont get any easier for the team as they head back out to Vancouver for an NASL match this weekend, making it two cross country trips in ten days. Returning from Vancouver, Montreal meet 2nd place Portland Timbers at Saputo Stadium next Wednesday then host Serie A side Fiorentina in the first of L’Impact’s summer friendlies.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Pachuca scored a wonder goal in the 93rd minute to beat Cruz Azul on aggregate Wednesday night and claim the CONCACAF Champions League title and secure a place in the World Club Cup. Cruz Azul had won the first leg 2-1 in Mexico City last Wednesday and it set up a thrilling second leg that culminated in a thrilling finish. A truly entertaining affair, if anyone had cared enough to watch it.

The 2009-10 edition of the CONCACAF Champions League was entertaining at times, but lets face it, this competition is never going anywhere until the Major League Soccer teams start to show that they belong in the tournament. Aside from the Pachuca-Houston matches a few years ago the MLS sides have looked woeful, outmatched and out of shape, and there are reasons for that, to be sure, but let us not, however, take anything away from the prowess of the teams from south of the Rio Grande.

FULHAM IN EUROPA LEAGUE FINAL, LIVERPOOL FALL IN SEMIFINALS

If you had bet in August that Fulham FC would be the last English team remaining in European competition this season, you would be a rich person indeed.

Fulham, powered by two late goals, pushed past Bundesliga side Hamburg Thursday Night at Craven Cottage to advance to the Europa League Finals on May 12.

Ironically, the 2010 Final will be played in Hamburg at the HSH-Nordbank Arena where Fulham managed a 0-0 draw in the first leg of the Semifinals.

Fulham will be playing Athletico Madrid who eliminated Liverpool FC and thus ended the dreams of an all-English Final.
