2010 LAMAR HUNT US OPEN CUP SEMIFINALS SET

July 24, 2010

2010 LAMAR HUNT US OPEN CUP SEMIFINALS SET

Seattle Sounders will look to return to the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Final for the second consecutive year on September 1, when the 2009 defending Champions host Chivas USA in the Semifinals of the 96-year-old tournament.

In fact, there is an opportunity for a repeat final from last season’s tournament as the other bracket holds 2009 runners-up and hosts DC United. The tw0-time Champion (1997-2008) United host the Columbus Crew.  Eliminated in the 3rd Round in last year’s tournament by the Rochester Rhino’s, the Crew won the tournament in 2002 and were beaten in the final by the double-winning Chicago Fire of 1998.

Chivas USA have never advanced this deep into the Open Cup and will have their back’s against the wall in the tight confines of Starfire Sports Complex, where Seattle beat the red-hot LA Galaxy 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

2010 SEMIFINAL SCHEDULE

Match 37            Sept 1 – 7:30pm DC United v Columbus Crew – RFK Stadium, Washington DC

Match 38            Sept 1 – 10:30pm Seattle Sounders v Chivas USA – Starfire Sports Complex, Tukwila WA

JULY 17: DESIGNATED PLAYER WATCH

UPDATED: DESIGNATED PLAYER WATCH

FIRE SIGN DP – MEXICAN INTERNATIONAL NERY CASTILLO

The Chicago Fire have announced the Designated Player signing of  Mexican International Nery Castillo who has been negotiating with Greek side Olympiacos, where he played from 2000-2007.

The 26-year-old Castillo, who played at Manchester City in 2008 as part of a loan deal; with his then club Shakhtar Donetsk, is a much more versatile player than Blanco.  Castillo can play up front, on the wing or can play an attacking role out of the midfield.

Castillo may be the answer to the Fire’s problems in terms of attack, but one can only hope that Carlos de los Cabos and Frank Klopas now turn their sights toward some defensive help.

The designated player announcement was made Saturday between Games 1 and 2 of the SuperLiga double header at Toyota Park.

RSL’S CHECKETTS HELPS RONALDINHO RUMOR STAY ALIVE

Real Salt Lake owner Dave Checkett’s has intimated that a DP signing may be headed to Los Angeles.

Checketts told radio listeners on KALL 10 Sports that he expected another big designated player signing in the league sooon, but quick assuaged people of the notion that it was a potential RSL signing.

2010 SUPERLIGA – WHAT TO WATCH FOR

FAMILIAR FOES – PACHUCA v HOUSTON

Possibly the best rivalry between an MLS club and a Mexican Club, these two have put on some of the best club matches seen on this continent in the CONCACAF Cahmpiosn League/Cup. The two sides played a memorable  SuperLiga semifinal goal fest in 2007 with the 10 man Dynamo getting a late equalizer to send the match to extra time only to see Pachuca take the match on penalties. The 2010 edition of this rivalry will be the Group A opener for both clubs. If you see only one SuperLiga match this year, make it this Thursday at Robertson Stadium.

SISTER SIDES? MORELIA v CHICAGO

The Chicago Fire and Mexican club Morelia have a sister club relationship.  They have had since 2003 and the Fire even sported Morelia colors for a few matches in the clubs 2004 MLS Season. What this relationship means, I have no idea, as the two clubs haven’t met since before the deal was made..

It was the quarterfinals of the  CONCACAF Champions Cup (Precursor to the current Champions League) in 2002 and the Fire came back in the 2nd leg of the tie at then home Cardinal Stadium in Naperville IL, only to see their efforts couldn’t stave off elimination.

So Wednesday Night the sister-clubs meet for the first time in eight years.  Outside of the Houston-Pachuca match, this may be, on paper anyway, the tie of the group stages.

PACHUCA: TEAM (MEXICAN) AMERICA

CF Pachuca is fast becoming a breeding ground for talent; American talent. Pachuca has not one but THREE Americans on it’s roster.  Two of them saw (more…)

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER TRANSFER WINDOW OPENS ON THURSDAY

The MLS transfer window opens this Thursday July 15, and in addition to a certain high profile signing being announced in New York, Seattle’s Blaise Nkufo, DC United’s Branko Boskovic, Chivas USA’s Giancarlo Maldonado and Toronto FC’s Mista will also become official members of their respective teams.

Here is the lowdown on who is coming, who is rumored to follow and (tear) who is just not an option.

RED BULLS SET TO NAME THIERRY HENRY ON THURSDAY

The New York Red Bulls have lined up a press conference to announce their second designated player on Thursday.

Though no names have been mentioned the signing will come as a surprise to no one and is widely considered the worst kept secret in the game.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER RETURNS TO ACTION – MLS WEEK 13 PREVIEW

Most everyone’s eyes will be on the World Cup this weekend, and rightly so, the sheer weight of match-ups over the next four days is incredible.

Having said that, lets take a look at what we have in store for ourselves this weekend and touch on some of the stories we may have missed while over-indulging in the World Cup Garden of Eden.

PPL PARK OPENS IN PHILADELPHIA THIS SUNDAY
The Philadelphia Union fans will agree with Tom Petty, the waiting is the hardest part, but now the wait is over as Peter Nowak’s boys will christen their new home, PPL Park on Sunday against Seattle Sounders at 5pm ET. The match will be shown on ESPN2 and will see Union attempt to turn around a less than stellar Expansion campaign. Union are dead last in the East having garnered 7 points from 10 matches. Philly fans will be hoping that the League’s newest Soccer Specific gem will provide the inspiration for some points down the stretch.

SACHA KLJESTAN MOVES TO EUROPE
Belgian Champions Anderlicht acquired Chivas USA captain Sacha Kljestan during the World Cup break leaving the Goats, who are in the midst of a five game losing streak, missing some key talent.  Manager Martin Vasquez has brought for Chivas USA midfield standout Paulo Nagamura back into the side with an aim to fill the missing Kljestan’s shoes. Another help for Chivas might come in the form of Venezuelan international
Giancarlo Maldonado who is training with the team.

BLAISE NKUFO IS COMING TO SEATTLE

2010 MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER SALARY LIST

Leave it Major League Soccer and the MLS Players Union to release the 2010 salary numbers when the whole world is watching the action in South Africa.

Needless to say, David Beckham is still the highest-paid player in Major League Soccer.

Beckham, who hasn’t played this season for the Los Angeles Galaxy because of a torn Achilles tendon, again tops the league at $6.5 million in guaranteed compensation this year, according to the list released Monday.

Landon Donovan, Beckham’s Galaxy teammate, is second at $2.13 million, followed by Juan Pablo Angel of the New York Red Bulls at $1.92 million. Toronto FC’s Julian de Guzman ($1.72 million) and Seattle Sounder Freddie Lungberg ($1.31 million) round out the top 5.

U.S. World Cup team players, aside from Donovan, include the Galaxy’s Edson Buddle ($188,448), Chivas USA’s Jonathan Bornstein ($100,000) and Real Salt Lake’s Robbie Findley ($87,316).

SACHA KLJESTAN TO JOIN ANDERLECHT

United States and Chivas USA Midfielder Sacha Kljestan has completed a move to Belgian side Anderlecht.

The Chivas USA captain, who is the club’s all-time leader in assists and matches played, completed the transfer to the Belgian First Division champion on Thursday.

Kljestan, who had a brief loan spell with Celtic in 2009, will join an Anderlecht team that won the 2009-10 Belgian Jupiler League and qualifies for the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

“I’m very excited and proud to be joining a club like Anderlecht,” Kljestan said, “and I wouldn’t be there to sign with them today if I hadn’t been for Chivas USA.

“I’m ready to take this exciting step in my career.”

Kljestan will join his new team when the summer transfer window opens in July.

FABIO CANNAVARO MOVES TO UAE CLUB

Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro made a shock move to Al-Ahli, a club in the United Arab Emirates.

SOCCER ON THE BOX – SOCCER ON TV THIS WEEKEND

ESPN2 to provide 24 straight hours of World Cup Pre-game

World Cup coverage will start a day early on ESPN2, next week as the channel will be offering a 24 hour pregame. That is straight World Cup coverage, discussion, documentaries, interviews and even a concert featuring the Black Eyed Peas and Shakira. Well done ESPN2.

MLS in talks with cable channel Versus

Major League Soccer’s deal with Fox Soccer Channel is up at the end of this season and league officials have met with exec’s from Comcast owned sports network Versus. It is certainly to early to tell if MLS is courting other broadcast partners to influence later negotiations with Fox, which currently has rights to MLS games as well as matches organized by the MLS owned Soccer United Marketing, or to discuss Versus’ strategy for development of the MLS and it’s broadcasts. Versus has certainly done a very good job for the NHL in a similar capacity. We shall see.

Soccer on TV this weekend

Certainly the match that has everyone excited, is the final tune-up for the US national team ahead of next week’s World Cup Group C opener against England on June 12.

Saturday morning’s match against Australia on ESPN2 / Galavision should be more than a final dress rehearsal for the side, it should be a good chance to see how the US’s Ultimate XI looks over 90 minutes.

In MLS action, DC and RSL renew the extra time US Open Cup thriller from Wednesday night, with RSL hoping for a different (more…)

AVRAM GRANT TO MANAGE WEST HAM UNITED

Many will feel that Avram Grant is a glutton for punishment. After do his best in the worst possible situation at Portsmouth, Grant will take the reigns at struggling West Ham United, replacing Gianfranco Zola in the position. Grant resigned from his post at Portsmouth after the team’s unlikely appearance in the FA Cup Final.

ESSIEN RULED OUT OF WORLD CUP

A huge blow was dealt to Ghana’s World Cup ambitions as Michael Essien was ruled out of the World Cup due to a knee injury suffered during January’s African Nations Cup. MLS WEEK 7 PREVIEW: NEW ENGLAND v CHIVAS

May 5, 2010

MLS WEEK 7 PREVIEW:

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION v CHIVAS USA

What an intriguing matchup. Both teams have the same 2-1-3 record and both have struggled to find form.

Though Chivas USA have seemed to right the ship in the past few matches, I still believe there is a lingering problem.  Whether that problem is as simple as needing a goal scorer or as complex as a communication problem on the field remains to be seen.

The Goats problems up front have been addressed in the last few weeks by have a group of players rotating in the striker position and they all have scored, but Justin Braun, Chukwudi Chijindu, and Maicon Santos will find the New England defense as tough as the one they encountered in Chicago.

SOCCER ON THE BOX – THE MIDWEEK

We are no longer inundated with a full slate of European fixtures on TV this Midweek, but we more then make up for it with the deciding match in the fight for the final Champions League spot in England and for the first time we get a chance to see some serious midweek Major League Soccer match ups. Before we get to that, lets talk Fourth Place.

Manchester City host Tottenham Hotspur at Eastlands tomorrow on ESPN2 in a match that will go a long way in sending one of the teams to the Champions League.  City is playing at home and sits in 5th place, just point being Spurs. A draw will do Spurs here, but remember that City also have a +2 better goal difference. It is literally all to play for.

These two sides have been the most entertaining all season and to see them go at each other on Wednesday should be a real treat, fasten seat belts.

SUPERLIGA: DATES AND VENUES ANNOUNCED

Major League Soccer and the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF) unveiled the dates and venues for the 2010 edition of SuperLiga on Thursday.  SuperLiga features MLS and Mexican soccer clubs and awards the winner with a big cash prize.

The four Major League Soccer teams in the 2010 Superliga qualified based on their 2009 regular season record and excluding teams already competing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.  2009 Finalists Chicago Fire will lead the MLS sides, with Chivas USA, Houston Dynamo and New England Revolution rounding out the field.

The four invited Mexican clubs have yet to be named but an announcement is expected following the conclusion of current season.

The 2010 Superliga will be the fourth consecutive year of the tournament and will be played over eight days beginning on Wednesday, July 14 at Chicago’s Toyota Park and at New England, though Gillette Stadium has yet to be confirmed as the venue. Attention then shifts west where on Thursday July 15 Houston’s Robertson Stadium and Home Depot Center, home of Chivas USA, will host matches.

SOCCER ON THE BOX THIS WEEKEND: IT’S ALL TO PLAY FOR FOR THE LAST CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SPOT

April 23, 2010

SOCCER ON THE BOX THIS WEEKEND

A few weeks ago Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool all had a shot at winning the coveted fourth place spot in the Premier League and thus securing the final Champions League slot. With all that European money and prestige on the line it is no wonder that the battle for the spot was so fierce.

It was Man City’s spot to lose, Liverpool had clearly fallen off the pace and Tottenham? Well Spurs schedule for the run in was going to be tough, maybe even impossible. They had to play all of the big three teams beginning with the North London Derby and the hated Arsenal. Spurs came away victorious and then played Chelsea as well as anyone has this season beating them too. It is now City that trail Spurs by 2 points. This weekend will see the final installment of the trilogy as Saturday morning brings us Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United on ESPN2 as our match of the week, with an honorable mention going to Arsenal v Manchester City on Fox Soccer Channel. Will this weekend decide both the Premiership title AND the Champions League spot? Doubtful as Manchester United can lose the title by losing to Spurs but Chelsea is unlikely to drop points while hosting Stoke on Sunday (also on FSC). In terms of the Champions League slot, regardless of the outcomes on Saturday Spurs and City must still play each other on Wednesday May 5, which could well and truly wrap up fourth position.

The Birmingham Derby, usually must see TV in it’s own right, is unfortunately on Fox Soccer Plus and thus not readily available.

I hope you have the Direct Kick package, because that is where all the action is at this weekend in Major League Soccer.

When Fox Soccer Channel was picking it’s match for this weekend, how did it overlook Columbus v Real Salt Lake? What a battle these two teams had over two legs in the first round of the playoffs last season. they are both thought of as the class of the league, though Columbus has already had two bye weeks and RSL has had to play a very tough opening schedule.  Chicago Houston would have been a great call too and the LA Galaxy going to KC also would have been something to see. Red Bull at Union was snapped up by TeleFutura and would be a tasty treat if TeleFutura’s coverage wasn’t so whack.  FSC brings us Chivas USA v San Jose Earthquakes. Sometimes I think the Fox Soccer Channel pick an inordinate amount of matches at the Home Depot Center because they just don’t like to travel.

MAJOR ROSTER MOVES LEAD UP TO FIRST KICK

March 27, 2010

MAJOR ROSTER MOVES LEAD UP TO FIRST KICK

TFC SCRAMBLES

Many Major League Soccer teams made moves in the last minutes before their 2010 First Kick this weekend, none more than Toronto FC. The Canadian side acquired midfielder Nick LaBrocca and a third-round MLS SuperDraft pick in 2011 from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for defender Marvell Wynne. LaBrocca appeared in 29 matches for the Mile-High club, while Wynne was touted as future US National team regular, but has struggled to shed the ‘all speed’ accusation levied on him by critics.

Toronto FC is desperately in need of some cap space but also has to fill some roster spots, moving Wynne will solve some of the teams budgetary concerns, no doubt shipping Welsh midfielder Carl Robinson and Goalkeeper Greg Sutton to Red Bull also helped, but the team didn’t stop there.

In more Goalkeeper moves, TFC then signed stopper Jon Conway, and waived goalkeeper Brian Edwards. Conway who was the first MLS player to be banned for substance abuse was put on waivers by Chivas USA earlier this week and is looking to resurrect his career.

Finally (or possibly not, there are a few minutes until kickoff after all) Toronto signed 30 year old Argentine midfielder Martin Saric. Saric (see if you can follow me on this one)  was born in Argentina, carries a Croatian passport, played most of his career in Romania and spent last season at a Slovenian Club. How TFC scouts found him I’ll never know, but Red’s fans can’t complain that the team isn’t LOOKING.

Though Toronto FC dominated last minute roster moves, they weren’t exclusive to them.

UNITED BOLSTERS BACKLINE

D.C. United addressed all complaints regarding it’s defense going into the season, signing three defenders in the lead up to First Kick.  Juan Manuel Pena, Carey Talley and Barry Rice.

Experience was obviously the watchword for First year United manager Curt Onalfo. That is exactly what the 37-year-old ex-Bolivian international Pena brings.  His 35 Bolivian Caps as well as over 14 years experience playing in Spain should have him rival anyone in the league for experience.

Carey Talley not only brings 12 years of MLS experience, the 33 year-old was a member of DC United’s championship era, having made 120 appearances for United form 1998-2001 and winning MLS Cup with the team in 99. Talley was acquired after being waived by Chivas USA and now gets a chance to return to the team he started with.

Rice, who attended the University of Kentucky and was a member of the venerable Chicago Fire Premier, joins the club after training with DC United in the preseason as a camp invitee.

REVS MANEUVER – BARRETT RETIRES

On Friday the New England Revolution re-signed midfielder Khano Smith who made 85 appearances for the club in 2005-08. Since then, he has tried to catch on at Red Bull New York and at English League Two side Lincoln City, but he returns in 2010 to the team where his pace helped both himself and the Revs to their most successful seasons.

Steve Nicol also made a move that won’t manifest itself for a few weeks in brining in Marko Perović on a free transfer from Swiss club FC Basel.  The 26 year-old Serbian midfielder still needs to work out visa concerns

To make room on the roster/cap New England cut Costa Rican midfielder Gabriel Badilla. Rev’s fans will not weep. I don’t believe Badilla played a minute for the team in 2009.

In some sad news Houston Dynamo defender Wade Barrett officially retired as a player, on Thursday.  He was a regular for my Fantasy Team in the early years and he will be missed.  Not all sad faces though as Barrett will step into an assistants role as of immediately.
