A Friendly at the Friendly Confines?

SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: FIRE v CLUB AMERICA AT WRIGLEY FIELD STILL IN THE PLANNING STAGES

Will there be a Friendly at the Friendly Confines? Perhaps in the near future.

A match between the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer and Mexican super club America has been in the works for a while now, though it’s way to early to give any details or even to pinpoint a date, or even target this season as a possibility. This story seemed to catch ‘fire’ due to an entry from Luis Arroyave’s ‘About Last Night…’ blog.

Though it is true that there is something in the works, it isn’t as easy as it looks to schedule an event at Wrigley, during the summer when the Cubs play an 82-game home schedule.

The Chicago Sting of the old North American Soccer League played at Wrigley, but soccer hasn’t been played at the North-Side Stadium since 1984. In recent years Wrigley has hosted big-name summer concerts tours, such as the Police and Elton John / Billy Joel. In 2009 the 95-year-old venue hosted the NHL Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings and this fall college football will return to the venue for the first time since 1938 when Northwestern hosts Illinois.
