WORLD CUP TV RATINGS, WEB TRAFFIC CONTINUE TO IMPRESS

WORLD CUP TV RATINGS, WEB TRAFFIC CONTINUE TO IMPRESS

TV numbers in the United States continue to be massive for the World Cup broadcasts on ESPN, ABC and Univision, as well as on the internet.

The United States last minute win over Algeria on Wednesday was viewed by an average of 6.12 million people on ESPN. That is the largest ever audience for a soccer match on the ESPN networks. Combined with the Spanish language numbers from Univision it hits 8.32 million.

Through Wednesday, Univision is averaging 1.98 million viewers a game, up 6 percent from 2006.

Thursday’s Mexico-France game was the Spanish-language network’s most-watched match, with 5.8 million viewers.

5.2 million viewers saw ESPN’s broadcast of the United States-Slovenia game on Friday and the United States-England game June 12 drew 12.9 million viewers on ABC.

The numbers through Wednesday are impressive. 2.6 million viewers on average per game saw the World Cup on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC, up from 1.8 million for the 2006 edition of the tournament in Germany.

HUGE US TV RATINGS FOR WORLD CUP BROADCASTS

HUGE US TV RATINGS FOR WORLD CUP BROADCASTS

Saturdays much hyped World Cup battle between US and England drew the fifth-best rating ever for a World Cup game in the United States, falling behind the 1994 Brazil-Italy Final, the 1994 Brazil-U.S. game and the 2006 Italy-France final and the 1994 Romania-U.S. game.

The match drew higher numbers than all of the Stanley Cup Finals Games, including the impressive Game 6 numbers, which had 8.3 million viewers, the highest in the NHL for 36 years.

Combined with Spanish language Univision’s telecast numbers, the match reaches 17 million, according to Sports Media Watch, and thereby had a large audience than the first four games of the NBA Finals.

The South Africa-Mexico opening game had an audience of 5.3 million on Univision alone, making it the most watched soccer game ever on Univision.

Through the first five matches of the 2010 World Cup, ESPN and ABC averaged 3,427,000 households and 4,937,000 viewers — up 95% and 108% from the 2006 tournament numbers.

ESPN3’s numbers are also astonishing, the broadband network had 73.6 million minutes generated on the site in the tournaments first three days, more than the entire month of June 2009.

SOCCER ON THE BOX – SOCCER ON TV THIS WEEKEND

ESPN2 to provide 24 straight hours of World Cup Pre-game

World Cup coverage will start a day early on ESPN2, next week as the channel will be offering a 24 hour pregame. That is straight World Cup coverage, discussion, documentaries, interviews and even a concert featuring the Black Eyed Peas and Shakira. Well done ESPN2.

MLS in talks with cable channel Versus

Major League Soccer’s deal with Fox Soccer Channel is up at the end of this season and league officials have met with exec’s from Comcast owned sports network Versus. It is certainly to early to tell if MLS is courting other broadcast partners to influence later negotiations with Fox, which currently has rights to MLS games as well as matches organized by the MLS owned Soccer United Marketing, or to discuss Versus’ strategy for development of the MLS and it’s broadcasts. Versus has certainly done a very good job for the NHL in a similar capacity. We shall see.

Soccer on TV this weekend

Certainly the match that has everyone excited, is the final tune-up for the US national team ahead of next week’s World Cup Group C opener against England on June 12.

Saturday morning’s match against Australia on ESPN2 / Galavision should be more than a final dress rehearsal for the side, it should be a good chance to see how the US’s Ultimate XI looks over 90 minutes.

In MLS action, DC and RSL renew the extra time US Open Cup thriller from Wednesday night, with RSL hoping for a different (more…)
