Two Mexican League teams and two Major League Soccer teams have advanced out of the group stages of the 2010 SuperLiga and will face each other on August 4 and 5.

2008 SuperLiga Champions New England Revolution were the only team to take maximum points from the group stage as well as having allowed no goals thus far in the tournament, but with only a +3 goal difference and they will be challenged by Puebla FC who have score 5 goals in their three matches.

Runners-up in the 08 edition, this years Houston Dynamo won Group A. The Texas side will be facing a powerful Morelia club that, although they only won one of their group matches, have scored 7 goals.

Both Mexican survivors are hoping to appear in their first ever SuperLiga Final, while both MLS clubs advance, the teams will compete in a rematch of the 2008 edition.

DESIGNATED PLAYER UPDATE: LJUNGBERG DRAMA

DESIGNATED PLAYER UPDATE: LJUNGBERG DRAMA

If, early in this 2010 Major League Soccer campaign, I told you a Seattle Sounders standout was discontented and looking to be transfered, you would have assumed I meant Fredy Montero.  The Colombian 23-year-old was visibly not interested on the field, while off the field rumors were circulate about a move to European club.

Now, approaching the midway point in the season, the Sounder most likely to want out of Seattle is designated player Freddie Ljungberg. The rumors are raging that Ljungberg is back in Sweden, and there is growing concern that he is not returning.

A move back to a European club is possible, as is a potential move to New York. If the Red Bulls are unsuccessful in landing Barcelona’s Mexican international midfielder Rafael Marquez, they may look to grab Freddie as quickly as they can.  New York boss Hans Backe is a big fan of Ljungberg and has made no secret of the fact.

Where the 33-year-old will end up is only half speculation.  What is more intriguing is how we got to this point.

Ljungberg practiced with the team last week, but didn’t play against FC Dallas, and didn’t make the trip to DC for Thursday Night’s showdown with United. In reality, (more…)

2010 SUPERLIGA: WHAT TO WATCH FOR

2010 SUPERLIGA – WHAT TO WATCH FOR

FAMILIAR FOES – PACHUCA v HOUSTON

Possibly the best rivalry between an MLS club and a Mexican Club, these two have put on some of the best club matches seen on this continent in the CONCACAF Cahmpiosn League/Cup. The two sides played a memorable  SuperLiga semifinal goal fest in 2007 with the 10 man Dynamo getting a late equalizer to send the match to extra time only to see Pachuca take the match on penalties. The 2010 edition of this rivalry will be the Group A opener for both clubs. If you see only one SuperLiga match this year, make it this Thursday at Robertson Stadium.

SISTER SIDES? MORELIA v CHICAGO

The Chicago Fire and Mexican club Morelia have a sister club relationship.  They have had since 2003 and the Fire even sported Morelia colors for a few matches in the clubs 2004 MLS Season. What this relationship means, I have no idea, as the two clubs haven’t met since before the deal was made..

It was the quarterfinals of the  CONCACAF Champions Cup (Precursor to the current Champions League) in 2002 and the Fire came back in the 2nd leg of the tie at then home Cardinal Stadium in Naperville IL, only to see their efforts couldn’t stave off elimination.

So Wednesday Night the sister-clubs meet for the first time in eight years.  Outside of the Houston-Pachuca match, this may be, on paper anyway, the tie of the group stages.

PACHUCA: TEAM (MEXICAN) AMERICA

JULY 14 – SHORT CORNERS: INTERNATIONAL SOCCER NEWS NOTES AND RUMORS

RED BULLS FINALLY LAND THIERRY HENRY

The New York Red Bulls have made the worst kept secret in soccer a reality today by announcing the signing of France international Thierry Henry as a designated player.

Without question, Henry becomes the most decorated player to ever take the field in the 14 year history of Major League Soccer. Capped 123 times for France, Henry has a resume that includes World Cup, European Championship and Champions League titles, in addition to a number of domestic championships and scoring titles.

The highest profile signing for the league since David Beckham’s arrival, the former Arsenal striker will hope to revitalize a Red Bull attack that includes co-designated player Colombian Juan Pablo Angel.

The 32-year-old Henry will likely play his first match July 22nd against Tottenham Hotspur in the New York Football Challenge.

The announcement was made Thursday as the day marks the opening of the Major League Soccer transfer window, and Henry is expected to be the first of many designated players brought into the league under the new policies that allow for as many as three designated players per team.

Other signings ready to sign officially on Thursday include Spanish forward Mista who has signed with Toronto FC, Swiss international Blaise Nkufo who has signed to Seattle Sounders from Dutch Champions FC Twente, Branko Boskovich will join DC United and Venezuela’s all-time leading scorer Giancarlo Maldonado has signed with Chivas USA on a loan from Mexican side Atlante..

REDKNAPP EXTENDS SPURS STAY

Tottenham Hotspur have locked up manager Harry Redknapp through 2013.

The 63-year-old manager guided the White Hart Lane club to it’s first Champions League berth last season, and has been rewarded with a three year extension.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy reacted to big money offers from .

2010 MLS ALL-STAR STARTING XI  NAMED

The votes are in and here is your Starting XI to take on Manchester United at the MLS All-Star Game on July 28th at Reliant Stadium in Houston TX.

The players selected, were chosen by fans, the media, fellow players and MLS coaches and GMs with each group getting 25% say in the outcome (coaches and GM’s make up one group.

Keep in mind that the remaining 12 players will be announced on Thursday and that All-Star manager Bruce Arena can choose the actual starting XI from the entire squad.

A total of four Galaxy players make the XI followed by three RSL players and two from the Crew. One each from the Chicago Fire and Toronto FC. Landon Donovan will feature in his 10th appearance.

The MLS official website claims that 45,000 seats have been sold for Houston’s first ever All-Star game.

The match, which kicks off at 8:30pm ET and can be seen on on ESPN2, is scheduled right in the heart of CONCACAF Champions League action, and the Seattle Sounders will actually be playing at the same time the All-Stars tussle with United, thus eliminating one of the Leagues most followed teams from being a part of the festivities.  The Columbus Crew and LA galaxy players will see limited time due to their participation in the Champions League.  The league seems caught between high priorities here.

Having said that here are your heroes.

FANTASY FALLOUT – CHICAGO FOOTBALL LEAGUE – WEEK 13

FANTASY FALLOUT – CHICAGO FOOTBALL LEAGUE – WEEK 13

Major League Soccer returned to action this weekend with Week 13 of the season amid the turmoil and triumph of the 2010 World Cup. The results are in for Week 13 in the Chicago Football League and there is no change at the top of the table as Waterford United still holds the top spot by 5 points over Kafieen FC.

Just as in Week 12, there was a tie for most points in Week 13 with both Dave Mulvihill’s Chicago Inferno and Alexa Lim’s Dancing Nancies garnering 33 points. The two teams were even tied on goals scored, but the tie-breaker has to favor the Dancing Nancies who had the edge on assists.

Thus the Manager of the Week honors go to Alexa Lim and Dancing Nancies who fielded a well rounded side around the 17 points earned from two Columbus Crew players, including Goalkeeper Will Hesmer and handball artist Guillermo Barros Schellotto. Congratulations to Alexa who has won the Manager of the Week twice in the last three weeks.

The Chicago Inferno manager is kicking himself severely for being a hairs-breadth away from putting in Philadelphia Union’s Sebastian LeToux.

The Week 13 All-MFLS Team featured three Union players and two each from the Fire and Crew, but was bolstered by four Red Bulls, including Player of the Week Juan Pablo Angel who gathered 11 points.

DESIGNATED PLAYER WATCH

DESIGNATED PLAYER WATCH

With The World Cup winding down, it is only a matter of time before Major League Soccer fans will begin to look forward to their teams’ to target tantalizing talent. So here is an occasional look into the rumors and facts regarding the potential crop of household names coming to a soccer specific stadium near you.

MLS TO BATTLE BIG EUROPEAN CLUBS FOR POSSIBLE DP’S

Thierry Henry’s quick exit from the World Cup with France will have many New York Red Bull fans sharing a secret smile. Henry is expected to ink a two-year designated player contract with Major League Soccer to play Eastern Conference leaders.

Although the deal has been long-rumored to be done, there are still rumblings that the player may end up in the Premier League.

Henry is not the only example of MLS having to fight for potential DP’s.

Reports out of Spain have Real Madrid icon and MLS DP target Raul being wooed by Serie A side Sampadoria and Premier League side Blackburn Rovers. These reports come justdays after Bundesliga side Shalke 04 put in a bid.

Capped 102 times for Spain and a life-long Real Madrid player, the 33-year-old has found himself surplus to requirements with Los Merengues. Schalke are looking for someone to replace Kevin Kuranyi who moved on to Dynamo Moscow.

Juventus Striker David Trezeguet is also being pursued by MLS but now seems to have an offer from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux.

FANTASY FALLOUT – CHICAGO FOOTBALL LEAGUE-WEEK 12

FANTASY FALLOUT – CHICAGO FOOTBALL LEAGUE-WEEK 12

Bet you thought I forgot about Week 12, well I’ve been a bit busy. There is this other tournament around that may one day rival the Chicago Football League in popularity, but I digress. Lets take a look at the stunted Week 12 before we re-embark on the CFL season starting Friday night with week 13.

We headed into this break with Waterford United leading Kaffieen FC by 5 points atop the Chicago Football League tables.

As was always likely with only four matches being played, there was not a lot of points to be had out there, so it is no surprise that there were two candidates tied for the Manager of the Week award. Both Bill Lim’s Kaffieen FC and Bill Sullivans’s Mighty Wombats garnered 20 points in Week 12, but like the World Cup, we will decide this by Goals Scored.

Thus Bill Lim is the Week 12 Manager of the Week with 4 goals scored to only 2 for Sullivan. Lim has now won the award 3 times in 12 weeks, congrats to Mr. Lim.

FANTASY FALLOUT – Chicago Football League – Week 11

Waterford United are still atop the Chicago Football League standings after 11 weeks, but the Irish sides lead has been cut to 10 points after a dismal, league-low -2 point week.

In second place after 10 weeks, Kaffieen FC had an opportunity to pounce on Waterford, but could only manage 12 points. Good enough for 3rd from last in Week 11 CFL action, but nowhere near enough to hold off Nagoya FC, who have slid into second place overall after a 26 point week.

TORONTO TO HOST 2010 MLS CUP

March 25, 2010

The sexy Philip F Anschutz Trophy

BMO FIELD TO HOST 2010 MLS CUP

Word out of toronto is that BMO Field will host the 2010 MLS Cup on November 21st.  Toronto fans had not held out much hope of  landing the final due to Red Bull Arena stealing the show this season and Philadelphia’s new palace opening up in June.  The MLS decision makers felt different awarding the match to a franchise that has proven it belongs in the league and rewarding a loyal fanbase.

Red Bull Arena had submitted a bid to host as did the Philadelhia Union.  LA’s Home Depot Center also entered the fray, but MLS Cup will be hoisted North of the Border for the first time in the league’s 15 year history.

THE OFF-SEASON PART ONE 2010: THE YEAR WE MAKE CONTRACT

March 21, 2010

THE OFF-SEASON PART ONE 2010: THE YEAR WE MAKE CONTRACT It is only fair that we begin this look back at the off-season by addressing the one issue that may just have prolonged it. After a long and sometimes bitter battle the MLS Players Union and the League hashed out the major points of a new five-year Collective Bargaining Agreement, or CBA. The sides were never really close together on this agreement.

The players were constantly reminding us that the Union’s biggest grievance was ‘players rights’ and not a simple rise in pay. Basic freedom of movement and guaranteed contracts were the factors that defined ‘players rights’. The League, for their part insisted that what the players wanted was akin to Free Agency, something MLS regularly insisted was not even on the table for discussion.

The perfect example of the players grumblings was the Kevin Hartman situation. Hartman was essentially waived or cut by the Kansas City Wizards. Unlike other leagues, when Hartman was cast loose he was not free to sign with another team. KC still held his ‘rights’. Another team had to ‘acquire’ his rights in order to sign him. So as the Hartman story unfolded, FC Dallas made a trade for his rights and subsequently signed the MLS standout. The Union stressed that when a player is let go they should have the power to negotiate with other teams. The League feels this is Free Agency, which is something that MLS cannot allow at this stage in its existence.

This process dragged out forcing both sides to set new deadlines and continue negotiations. An in dependent arbitrator stepped in to help both sides avert a work stoppage, but even so the Players had voted to strike on this coming Monday if the issues were not resolved. They eventually were, thankfully as a work stoppage in a year that featured a World Cup, a new franchise, and two new soccer specific stadia would have been horrible for both sides, and of course the fans.

If you followed the CBA battle over the last few months you know how exhausting and frustrating it was to be a fan. Bloggers, journalists and podcasters alike toiled through it getting every scrap of news they could. Kudos to the It’s Called Football, American Soccer Show and MLSTalk podcasts which regularly had on guests that tried to shed a little light on the process, also the invaluable blogs Soccer by Ives and Soccer Insider. More details on this in the coming days as specifics of the deal become available.

Next in the Off-season wrap-up, a look at the changes regarding stadiums around MLS
