2010 LAMAR HUNT US OPEN CUP SEMIFINALS SET

Seattle Sounders will look to return to the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Final for the second consecutive year on September 1, when the 2009 defending Champions host Chivas USA in the Semifinals of the 96-year-old tournament.

In fact, there is an opportunity for a repeat final from last season’s tournament as the other bracket holds 2009 runners-up and hosts DC United. The tw0-time Champion (1997-2008) United host the Columbus Crew.  Eliminated in the 3rd Round in last year’s tournament by the Rochester Rhino’s, the Crew won the tournament in 2002 and were beaten in the final by the double-winning Chicago Fire of 1998.

Chivas USA have never advanced this deep into the Open Cup and will have their back’s against the wall in the tight confines of Starfire Sports Complex, where Seattle beat the red-hot LA Galaxy 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER RETURNS TO ACTION – MLS WEEK 13 PREVIEW

Most everyone’s eyes will be on the World Cup this weekend, and rightly so, the sheer weight of match-ups over the next four days is incredible.

Having said that, lets take a look at what we have in store for ourselves this weekend and touch on some of the stories we may have missed while over-indulging in the World Cup Garden of Eden.

PPL PARK OPENS IN PHILADELPHIA THIS SUNDAY
The Philadelphia Union fans will agree with Tom Petty, the waiting is the hardest part, but now the wait is over as Peter Nowak’s boys will christen their new home, PPL Park on Sunday against Seattle Sounders at 5pm ET. The match will be shown on ESPN2 and will see Union attempt to turn around a less than stellar Expansion campaign. Union are dead last in the East having garnered 7 points from 10 matches. Philly fans will be hoping that the League’s newest Soccer Specific gem will provide the inspiration for some points down the stretch.

SACHA KLJESTAN MOVES TO EUROPE
Belgian Champions Anderlicht acquired Chivas USA captain Sacha Kljestan during the World Cup break leaving the Goats, who are in the midst of a five game losing streak, missing some key talent.  Manager Martin Vasquez has brought for Chivas USA midfield standout Paulo Nagamura back into the side with an aim to fill the missing Kljestan’s shoes. Another help for Chivas might come in the form of Venezuelan international
Giancarlo Maldonado who is training with the team.

BLAISE NKUFO IS COMING TO SEATTLE
This deal was done early in the season, but since then we have all had a chance to see Nkufo play for Switzerland in (more…)

INTERVIEW WITH KARTIK KRISHNAIYER OF THE NORTH AMERICAN SOCCER LEAGUE – PART ONE

INTERVIEW WITH KARTIK KRISHNAIYER OF THE NORTH AMERICAN SOCCER LEAGUE

This past off-season, was rife with dispute in the North American Soccer community, the much maligned labor agreement between Major League Soccer and the MLS Players Union his much of the civil war that was roiling in the lower divisions of US and Canadian soccer.

A feud amongst disgruntled owners of the United Soccer Leagues First Division teams, who all had differing and diverging views on ownership, marketing and league control led to a splinter group of core teams founding it’s own league. This league would become the North American Soccer League. A name synonymous with the founding of soccer on the continent, the North American Soccer League.

One of the first things the fledgling NASL did was to find a person who had a deep knowledge of how the sport is communicated in North America; the internet.  It seems, in hindsight, that selecting Kartik Krishnayier for the post of Director of Communications and Public Relations was a no-brainer. His familiarity with the history and traditions of the league, his desire to take the sport to a higher level in North America and his seemingly endless amount of energy in the world of soccer blogging and new media.
