Runners-up in the 08 edition, this years Houston Dynamo won Group A. The Texas side will be facing a powerful Morelia club that, although they only won one of their group matches, have scored 7 goals.

SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: REAL MADRID ROSTER (PRELIMINARY)

Real Madrid announced their preliminary team roster for their 2010 USA Tour.  Some preliminary roster! The sheer weight of star power here is extraordinary. Four World Cup winners in a squad of only 13, and a midfield that would rival any in the world.

This team does not include the laundry list of potential signings rumored to be coming to the Bernabeau for the 2010-11 European season.

Newly appointed super manager José Mourinho will have his work cut out for him when picking a starting XI against legendary Mexican side Club América at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park on August 4, followed by a match against the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on August 7, the latter of which will be shown live on Fox Soccer Channel.

FORBES: MANCHESTER UNITED IS WORLD’S RICHEST CLUB

July 22, 2010

FORBES: MANCHESTER UNITED IS WORLD’S RICHEST CLUB

Manchester United, amid constant reports of debt and disorder, is still the most valuable franchise in all of sports.

Financial publishing and media company, Forbes released its annual list of the world’s most valuable teams this week, with the English Premier League club Manchester United st the top of the list, valued at $1.84 billion.

United seems to have a stranglehold on the top spot of a list dominated by the National Football League, who place all 32 franchises in the top 50.

The success of Manchester United, financially, seems at odds with the clubs appearance of instability.  The struggles of United’s American owners, the Glazer family, are well documented in the soccer world. Vocal fan movements, such as the Green and Gold movement, demanding the family sell the club, are large and well supported. (more…)

2010 SUPERLIGA – WHAT TO WATCH FOR

FAMILIAR FOES – PACHUCA v HOUSTON

Possibly the best rivalry between an MLS club and a Mexican Club, these two have put on some of the best club matches seen on this continent in the CONCACAF Cahmpiosn League/Cup. The two sides played a memorable  SuperLiga semifinal goal fest in 2007 with the 10 man Dynamo getting a late equalizer to send the match to extra time only to see Pachuca take the match on penalties. The 2010 edition of this rivalry will be the Group A opener for both clubs. If you see only one SuperLiga match this year, make it this Thursday at Robertson Stadium.

SISTER SIDES? MORELIA v CHICAGO

The Chicago Fire and Mexican club Morelia have a sister club relationship.  They have had since 2003 and the Fire even sported Morelia colors for a few matches in the clubs 2004 MLS Season. What this relationship means, I have no idea, as the two clubs haven’t met since before the deal was made..

It was the quarterfinals of the  CONCACAF Champions Cup (Precursor to the current Champions League) in 2002 and the Fire came back in the 2nd leg of the tie at then home Cardinal Stadium in Naperville IL, only to see their efforts couldn’t stave off elimination.

So Wednesday Night the sister-clubs meet for the first time in eight years.  Outside of the Houston-Pachuca match, this may be, on paper anyway, the tie of the group stages.

PACHUCA: TEAM (MEXICAN) AMERICA

CF Pachuca is fast becoming a breeding ground for talent; American talent. Pachuca has not one but THREE Americans on it’s roster.  Two of them saw (more…)

SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE:REAL MADRID TO PLAY GALAXY AT ROSE BOWL

The Los Angeles Galaxy have scheduled an August 7 match against Real Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California to replace the previously scheduled friendly against European Champions Inter Milan.

No reasons were given as to why the Inter Milan game is no longer going ahead as scheduled, but according to the Galaxy website, both the LA club and the Italian powerhouse agreed to reschedule for a later date.

Madrid, now helmed by Jose Mourinho is one of the most decorated teams in the history of the sport, dominating the early years of the European Cup, now known as the Champions League.

Los Galacticos played the Galaxy in 2005 at the Home Depot Center winning 2-0, but this match is scheduled for the venerable Rose Bowl.

The match will be the Galaxy’s first at the 88-year-old stadium since last August when they were defeated by the Catalan giants Barcelona. The Galaxy were based at the Rose Bowl from their inaugural year in 1996 through the opening of the Home Depot Center in 2002 Major League Soccer debuted in 1996. The 92,000 seat venue, which will also see Cruz Azul take on Club America this summer, has hosted a World Cup Final, Women’s World Cup Final, a Gold Medal Olympic Match in addition to many Super Bowls and college football championships.

SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: GALAXY TO HOST INTER MILAN

SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: GALAXY TO HOST INTER MILAN

Inter Milan wasted no time setting up their pre-season. The European champions season ended Saturday and they have already lined up three dates in the United States to prepare for the defense of their impressive Treble.

The Los Angeles Galaxy today announced that they are going to host the Champions League winners at the Home Depot Center on August 7.

This is the second date the Italian Superclub has organized against a Major League Soccer team in the past 24 hours as they announced a match against FC Dallas for August 5 at Pizza Hut Park.

One cannot help but wonder about playing these matches at the MLS grounds when, in both Dallas and Los Angeles, there are massive venues that Inter Milan could sell out.

No word on an Inter roster, as both the World Cup and the transfer window loom between these announcements and the actual visit. More regarding tickets for Season Ticket holders, TV and rosters will be announced in the future, watch this space.

SOCCER ON THE BOX: Soccer on TV this Weekend

It’s really a can’t miss weekend on the box. MLS Week 9, Summer Friendlies, International Friendlies, the 2nd Leg of Mexican League Final.

Oh, and did I mention the 2010 Champions League Final featuring Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan up against Bayern Munich, managed by the ‘Special One’s’ former mentor, Louis Van Gaal’s. There is no shortage of drama surrounding this Final, taking place on a Saturday for the first time in the history of the competition. It really is must see TV for any fan of the game, and a (more…)

NUTRILITE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP-WEEK 4 PREVIEW-Vancouver Look to Stay Alive at Home

Toronto FC has their 2010 Nutrilite Canadian Championship destiny in their hands this week. A win against Vancouver Whitecaps at rainy Swangard Stadium Wednesday Night will give the Reds the tournament with two games yet to play.

The shoe is on the other foot for the Whitecaps. With three points, Vancouver will live to fight another day. Or at least die another day, as they must take maximum points in their final three matches. The ‘Caps must play like they have nothing to loose.

“It’s a do or die game basically,” Whitecaps keeper Jay Nolly told CTV. ”We know we need a win or a tie to keep going. They know if they get a win it’s all over.”

“We’re not afraid of them,” said ‘Caps forward Marcus Haber. “We’re confident in our own abilities and we’re not going to worry about them too much. We’re just going to focus on ourselves.”

Three consecutive draws at home will hurt a teams confidence though, especially when one of those matches were to Montreal in Week 2 of the NCC. A match that, if won, would have changed the face of the tournament and given Vancouver a little breathing room.

SOCCER ON THE BOX – YOUR TV WEEKEND

SOCCER ON THE BOX – YOUR TV WEEKEND

The Premiership comes to a close on Sunday, and barring some kind of disaster for Chelsea, the title will go to the Blues. Tottenham has locked up 4th place and the final Champions League spot and can even seize 3rd place from Arsenal with a win on Sunday and a Gunner loss at Europa Cup Finalists Fulham at the Emirates. The rest of the drama has been sorted, even the relegation battles.

More exciting is the Championship Promotion Playoffs, the 1st Legs of which take place this weekend.  Frustratingly the Sunday match between Leicester City and Cardiff City doesn’t seem to be available to watch anywhere in the States (If I find out any information regarding this I will post it as soon as possible). The Saturday match featuring Blackpool hosting Nottingham Forest will be shown on Fox Soccer Plus, and if you can watch it, I wholeheartedly recommend doing just that. I strongly believe that the promotion playoffs are the last remnants of truly English Football, something that gets lost in the Premier League.  The playoffs are always entertaining for the neutral and nerve-racking for the fan of any club involved. The prize? Playing in the most entertaining, powerful, lucrative and renowned leagues on the planet, in any sport.

There is a shinny trophy and a truck-load of cash too.

MLS WEEK 7 PREVIEW: NEW ENGLAND v CHIVAS

MLS WEEK 7 PREVIEW:

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION v CHIVAS USA

What an intriguing matchup. Both teams have the same 2-1-3 record and both have struggled to find form.

Though Chivas USA have seemed to right the ship in the past few matches, I still believe there is a lingering problem.  Whether that problem is as simple as needing a goal scorer or as complex as a communication problem on the field remains to be seen.

The Goats problems up front have been addressed in the last few weeks by have a group of players rotating in the striker position and they all have scored, but Justin Braun, Chukwudi Chijindu, and Maicon Santos will find the New England defense as tough as the one they encountered in Chicago.

NUTRILITE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP: ROUND TWO PREVIEW

One of the most memorable matches in Vancouver Whitecaps history took place just a bout a year ago. the odd thing about that fact is Vancouver didn’t play in the match. Leading last seasons Nutrilite Canadian Championship going into the final contest between Montreal Impact and Toronto FC, Vancouver knew that only a blowout win for Toronto FC would cost them the NCC title, this made little difference to Montreal coach Marc Dos Santos.

The Impact sat virtually all of their starters, stating that they had no chance to win the tournament and wanted to focus their energy on the USL Division 1 season. The result was a 6-1 thrashing by Toronto FC who took the Championship on goal difference over Vancouver.

The memory of this is likely to be forefront in the minds of the thousands of the Whitecaps fans attending the second match of the 2010 edition of the Canadian Championship Wednesday Night at Swangard Stadium. A fact that has not eluded Dos Santos.
