LES ROUGES REPORT

An Occasional Update on Canadian Soccer

NO CANADIAN WORLD CUP UNTIL 2034

Canada will not attempt to host the World Cup until at least 2034, according to the Canadian Soccer Association.

“Canada has great organizational ability to host a FIFA men’s World Cup, as it has for a Summer Olympics and two Winter Olympics, so certainly, from a Canadian perspective, we would be great hosts for a men’s World Cup,” said the CSA’s general secretary Peter Montopoli, who cited a number of concerns that would have to be addressed before the tournament could be even considered, including the proper time frame. “We would have to wait for our turn,”

The United States has put in a bid for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup and, if successful, the tournament would not likely return to North America for decades.

Montopoli also stated finance, infrastructure and national team performance as key areas that would have to be improved upon.

Stadium requirements would also have to be met, and the CSA would need a minimum of 10 world-class facilities capable of holding (more…)

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER RETURNS TO ACTION – MLS WEEK 13 PREVIEW

Most everyone’s eyes will be on the World Cup this weekend, and rightly so, the sheer weight of match-ups over the next four days is incredible.

Having said that, lets take a look at what we have in store for ourselves this weekend and touch on some of the stories we may have missed while over-indulging in the World Cup Garden of Eden.

PPL PARK OPENS IN PHILADELPHIA THIS SUNDAY
The Philadelphia Union fans will agree with Tom Petty, the waiting is the hardest part, but now the wait is over as Peter Nowak’s boys will christen their new home, PPL Park on Sunday against Seattle Sounders at 5pm ET. The match will be shown on ESPN2 and will see Union attempt to turn around a less than stellar Expansion campaign. Union are dead last in the East having garnered 7 points from 10 matches. Philly fans will be hoping that the League’s newest Soccer Specific gem will provide the inspiration for some points down the stretch.

SACHA KLJESTAN MOVES TO EUROPE
Belgian Champions Anderlicht acquired Chivas USA captain Sacha Kljestan during the World Cup break leaving the Goats, who are in the midst of a five game losing streak, missing some key talent.  Manager Martin Vasquez has brought for Chivas USA midfield standout Paulo Nagamura back into the side with an aim to fill the missing Kljestan’s shoes. Another help for Chivas might come in the form of Venezuelan international
Giancarlo Maldonado who is training with the team.

BLAISE NKUFO IS COMING TO SEATTLE
This deal was done early in the season, but since then we have all had a chance to see Nkufo play for Switzerland in (more…)

SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: GALAXY TO HOST INTER MILAN

Inter Milan wasted no time setting up their pre-season. The European champions season ended Saturday and they have already lined up three dates in the United States to prepare for the defense of their impressive Treble.

The Los Angeles Galaxy today announced that they are going to host the Champions League winners at the Home Depot Center on August 7.

This is the second date the Italian Superclub has organized against a Major League Soccer team in the past 24 hours as they announced a match against FC Dallas for August 5 at Pizza Hut Park.

One cannot help but wonder about playing these matches at the MLS grounds when, in both Dallas and Los Angeles, there are massive venues that Inter Milan could sell out.

No word on an Inter roster, as both the World Cup and the transfer window loom between these announcements and the actual visit. More regarding tickets for Season Ticket holders, TV and rosters will be announced in the future, watch this space.

SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: BOLTON WANDERERS v CHARLESTON BATTERY

The 136 year-old English Premier League club Bolton Wanderers have added a second friendly match to their 2010 summer tour, as they tune up for their 10th consecutive Premier League season.

The Trotters will take on USL side Charleston Battery at Blackbaud Stadium on July 17.

“Bringing Bolton Wanderers to Charleston is a wonderful opportunity for the City and for the people in the surrounding area to see a Barclays Premier League team playing at our home, Blackbaud Stadium.” said Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser in a press release.

Tickets will go on sale May 17, but no details were given regarding existing season ticket holders.

This will not be the first English side to be entertained at Blackbaud Stadium, considered North America’s first ever soccer specific stadium, Charleston beat Sunderland AFC 2-1 in 2004.

This is the second date added to Bolton’s North American schedule, they will head to Canada after the Charleston match to take on Toronto FC at BMO Field.
