LES ROUGES REPORT: An Occasional Update on Canadian Soccer

July 8, 2010

LES ROUGES REPORT

An Occasional Update on Canadian Soccer

NO CANADIAN WORLD CUP UNTIL 2034

Canada will not attempt to host the World Cup until at least 2034, according to the Canadian Soccer Association.

“Canada has great organizational ability to host a FIFA men’s World Cup, as it has for a Summer Olympics and two Winter Olympics, so certainly, from a Canadian perspective, we would be great hosts for a men’s World Cup,” said the CSA’s general secretary Peter Montopoli, who cited a number of concerns that would have to be addressed before the tournament could be even considered, including the proper time frame. “We would have to wait for our turn,”

The United States has put in a bid for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup and, if successful, the tournament would not likely return to North America for decades.

Montopoli also stated finance, infrastructure and national team performance as key areas that would have to be improved upon.

Stadium requirements would also have to be met, and the CSA would need a minimum of 10 world-class facilities capable of holding (more…)

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER RETURNS TO ACTION – MLS WEEK 13 PREVIEW

Most everyone’s eyes will be on the World Cup this weekend, and rightly so, the sheer weight of match-ups over the next four days is incredible.

Having said that, lets take a look at what we have in store for ourselves this weekend and touch on some of the stories we may have missed while over-indulging in the World Cup Garden of Eden.

PPL PARK OPENS IN PHILADELPHIA THIS SUNDAY
The Philadelphia Union fans will agree with Tom Petty, the waiting is the hardest part, but now the wait is over as Peter Nowak’s boys will christen their new home, PPL Park on Sunday against Seattle Sounders at 5pm ET. The match will be shown on ESPN2 and will see Union attempt to turn around a less than stellar Expansion campaign. Union are dead last in the East having garnered 7 points from 10 matches. Philly fans will be hoping that the League’s newest Soccer Specific gem will provide the inspiration for some points down the stretch.

SACHA KLJESTAN MOVES TO EUROPE
Belgian Champions Anderlicht acquired Chivas USA captain Sacha Kljestan during the World Cup break leaving the Goats, who are in the midst of a five game losing streak, missing some key talent.  Manager Martin Vasquez has brought for Chivas USA midfield standout Paulo Nagamura back into the side with an aim to fill the missing Kljestan’s shoes. Another help for Chivas might come in the form of Venezuelan international
Giancarlo Maldonado who is training with the team.

The Portland Timbers New Logo

HATCHET JOB? PORTLAND TIMBERS BUNGLE CREST UNVEILING

Portland Timbers unveiled their new logo on Saturday and it didn’t go quite they way the team wanted it to go.

The Timbers, who have been playing in various leagues since the early 1970’s, will begin play in Major League Soccer next season as an expansion franchise.

The team set up a public watch party in Portland’s Director Park to see the match and planned to use the captive audience of thousands to show the team’s new look. Timbers had a marketing campaign designed to slowly build interest in the re-branding by releasing a number of ‘video clues’ to show the connection between their classic look, a look established in 1975 when the team debuted in the old North American Soccer League.

Confusion in the front office, however, led to merchandisers in the city selling products featuring the new crest a day before it’s public unveiling at halftime of the US-England World Cup match.

NUTRILITE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP: D-RO GOAL ELIMINATES IMPACT

NUTRILITE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP: DE ROSARIO’S GOAL ELIMINATES IMPACT

It was a huge week for Montreal. The Impact were named Major League Soccer’s 19th team and the Canadians ousted the defending champions from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but one mission that was just beyond the city’s reach was an Impact victory over Toronto FC.

Dwayne De Rosario ended that dream with a second half strike. Nick LaBracca bounced a well-slotted through ball into on form Chad Barrett. Impact ‘keeper Matt Jordan made a diving save but the rebound fell just right for De Rosario who buried the nights only goal. A goal, in the 73rd minute, that gave Toronto FC their first road win in any competition this season.

INTERVIEW WITH KARTIK KRISHNAIYER OF THE NORTH AMERICAN SOCCER LEAGUE – PART ONE

May 12, 2010

INTERVIEW WITH KARTIK KRISHNAIYER OF THE NORTH AMERICAN SOCCER LEAGUE

This past off-season, was rife with dispute in the North American Soccer community, the much maligned labor agreement between Major League Soccer and the MLS Players Union his much of the civil war that was roiling in the lower divisions of US and Canadian soccer.

A feud amongst disgruntled owners of the United Soccer Leagues First Division teams, who all had differing and diverging views on ownership, marketing and league control led to a splinter group of core teams founding it’s own league. This league would become the North American Soccer League. A name synonymous with the founding of soccer on the continent, the North American Soccer League.

One of the first things the fledgling NASL did was to find a person who had a deep knowledge of how the sport is communicated in North America; the internet.  It seems, in hindsight, that selecting Kartik Krishnayier for the post of Director of Communications and Public Relations was a no-brainer. His familiarity with the history and traditions of the league, his desire to take the sport to a higher level in North America and his seemingly endless amount of energy in the world of soccer blogging and new media.

MONTREAL IMPACT OFFICIALLY NAMED MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER’S 19TH TEAM

May 7, 2010

MONTREAL IMPACT OFFICIALLY WELCOMED AS MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER’S 19TH TEAM

In 2012 Montreal Impact will be celebrating the clubs 20th year in existence, but in the same year, they will be celebrating the clubs inaugural season in Major League Soccer.

Both Major League Soccer and the Montreal Impact called press conferences on Friday for  an announcement that was one of the worst kept secrets in North American Soccer as it had been anticipated and expected for months.

The announcement that Montreal would be awarded a Major League Soccer team for the 2012 season, becoming the league’s 19th team and the leagues 3rd Canadian team, was still warmly regarded by American and Canadian fans alike.

Toronto FC, joined the league in 2007 and Vancouver Whitecaps will enter the league for the 2011 season, meaning that in the span of 5 years Canada has gone from no top-tier professional soccer clubs, to having three; an achievement that will, no doubt have a significant ‘impact’ on the long-term exposure, marketing and development of the sport in Canada and the continent in general.

Legitimate stadium, committed ownership and tradition were all cited as reasons when Vancouver was admitted as MLS’s 17th, just over a year ago, but those praises could apply equally to Montreal. Congratulations to Montreal, the Impact and its fans. A very fitting and welcome new addition to Major League Soccer.
