Something to Cheer About at Eastlands

TUESDAY’S SHORT CORNERS – INTERNATIONAL SOCCER NEW, NOTES AND RUMORS

MANCHESTER CITY SPENDING SPREE LOOMING

It is getting increasingly difficult for Manchester City fans to get a handle on all the signings that MAY take place at Eastlands, as there are so many and some contradict each other.

The most recent is the long rumored signing of Yaya Toure as part of a $100 million spending spree that also includes David Silva and Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.

Toure’s move to City, which will put him on the same club as his brother Kolo, was all but confirmed by the Barcelona website.

“In the case of Toure,” the statement read “[Barcelona director-general Joan] Oliver has recognized an understanding between the club interested in the midfielder, Manchester City, and Barca, but the transfer cannot be made official yet.”

Silva is reported to be joining Toure in the midfield on the blue side of Manchester this season. The Spanish international, currently on duty at the World Cup in South Africa, has signed a 4-year contact at Eastlands.

Cash strapped Valencia sold the player to City for a fee around $40 million.

City are also planning a swoop for Wolfsburg striker Dzeko, who bagged 27 goals in 46 appearances for the club last season. Chelsea and Manchester United have been in the hunt for the Bosnian finisher.

Roberto Mancini’s side also has revitalized interest in Serbia left-back Aleksandar Kolarov after Lazio couldn’t complete a sale to Real Madrid.

CSKA Moscow’s Serbian striker Milos Krasic, American talisman Landon Donovan and Barcelona’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic are all high on the rumored transfer list for City.

One player, who apparently won’t be heading to Eastlands, is Aston Villa midfielder Jamers Milner. Villa shot down a $27 million bid from City last week, but conflicting reports this week have left the England international’s future cloudy.

The Daily Mirror has City signing the 24-year-old for $37 million, while other reports have Mancini giving up the quest for Milner as the addition of Silva and Toure make the move unnecessary.

REAL CONFIRM DI MARIA DEAL

Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Angel di Maria to $30 million six-year deal, making the Argentina winger Jose Mourinho’s first signing since taking over as manager of the club.

The 22-year-old had been one of the most sought talents in Europe, having won the double in Portugal last season with Benfica while being named the league’s player of the year.

“It is an honor to know that Jose Mourinho wants to sign me.” Di Maria told the media. “It will be very nice to play in the same team as Cristiano Ronaldo and many other stars, but for now I’m focused on the Argentina team.”

Di Maria is currently on International Duty with Argentina at the World Cup in South Africa, where his boss, Diego Maradona had nothing but good things to say about him.

“He is a spectacular player, who is growing day by day. He faces defenders continually and that’s what people pay for today in the world. I hope they [Benfica] sell him for €200 million and earn a lot of silver.”

BARCELONA CONFIRM THE EXIT OF TOURE AND HENRY

Yaya Toure and Thierry Henry are free to leave Barcelona, according to the teams website.

“Barcelona director-general Joan Oliver has said that the club has agreed the exits of Yaya Touré and Thierry Henry but that at the moment the final moves are in their hands.”

Toure, long-rumored to be moving to Manchester City after the World Cup, was unhappy with the confidence shown in him at Barca.

Henry, also used indifferently at is likely to complete his move to Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls.

CITY AND EVERTON TARGET DONOVAN WHILE HE DEALS WITH FAMILY DRAMA

Landon Donovan’s performance at the World Cup with the United States has put him in the spotlight, in good and bad ways.

On the positive side, David Moyes’ Everton, is still targeting him where the American number 10 spent the winter on loan, but now there are reports that Manchester City are looking secure the midfielders services.

On the negative side, Donovan is about to be introduced to British Tabloid life. Yahoo news has been reporting that the La Galaxy man is on the verge of a reunion with his estranged wife Bianca Kajlich, but there are reports out of the tabloids that a woman in Britain was planning to go public in the tabloids there that Donovan was the father of her as-yet-unborn child, fathered while he was on loan in Liverpool.

CELTIC BID FOR BULLARD, SIGN KOREAN CHA

Jimmy Bullard could leave Hull City to join Celtic on a season-long loan deal. The recently relegated club has given the Glasgow powerhouse permission to speak to the 31-year-old striker.

“I have taken a call from Celtic asking about the possibility of taking Jimmy Bullard on a season-long loan,” Hull’s head of football operations Adam Pearson told the Daily Express. “We’ve told Celtic we’d be willing to let Jimmy go out on loan and it is now up to the player. If Jimmy decides he wants to go to Celtic then we won’t stand in his way. He has to consider what he wants to do.”

Bullard is currently on his holidays and will make a decision regarding his future when he returns, though there are Premiership clubs interested also.

“We have had enquiries from other English clubs but nothing as concrete as Celtic’s interest. As things stand I would say Celtic would be favorites to sign Jimmy.”

Meanwhile, Celtic are putting the final touches on a deal for Republic of Korea defender Cha Du Ri.

The 29-year-old is currently out of contract after leaving Bundesliga side SC Freiburg.

“Tomorrow, I fly to Glasgow to undergo the medical check,” Cha told the Daily Mail. “Then I will take two weeks vacation in South Korea.”
