JULY 25 – SHORT CORNERS

World Soccer News, Notes and Rumors

MEXICAN PLAYERS ON THE MOVE TO EUROPE?
Mexican winger Pablo Barrera is on the wish list of both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

The attention by the Premier League clubs is so great that a deal with Serie A side Lazio was rejected by the 23-year-old, in order to learn more about the interest of the English sides.

The Roman club attempted to sign Barrera on a one-year loan from Mexican club UNAM Pumas with the option of making the deal permanent for a bargain $4.48 million.

Tottenham like Barrera’s versatility, as the player who can be used on either flank as well as up top.

Manchester United are also said to have been intrigued by Barrera’s performances in the Mexican League having scored 12 goals in 28 league games over the last year, as well as his super-sub role at the World Cup for Mexico.

“I hope I can go abroad to play in a traditional club in Europe, but first I want to do well in the World Cup,” he told Super Deporte.

“I like football in Spain … the Italian, English, I like various styles of the game. I aspire to that, I want to be in a good team, that’s all I want.”

Spurs may be trying to land a Mexican, but they are also in danger of losing one as Giovani dos Santos is being hunted by Serie A side Genoa. The 21-year-old midfielder has been at Spurs since 2008 and has rarely made an impact.

Pumas are enjoying the rumors that defender Efrain Juarez is the next big Mexican player to move to Europe, but the $8.6 million price tag may be the reason he hasn’t moved anywhere.

MORE MANAGER MOVES IN ENGLAND

Liverpool have yet to name Roy Hodgson their new manager, but already Fulham FC have made moves to replace him.

Sven-Goran Eriksson is the favorite to be named as Hodgson’s replacement at Craven Cottage, though Tony Mowbray and Mark Hughes are also on the short-list of candidates.

Ericksson, currently at the World Cup as manager of Ivory Coast was quick to downplay the rumors.

“As usual there are rumours and agents phoning, but we will see,” Eriksson told reporters. “I haven’t thought about my future and I haven’t spoken to anyone because I don’t want to do that during the World Cup.”

Meanwhile Peter Reid has returned to Football Management and was named the new boss at Plymouth, replacing for New England Revolution assistant Paul Mariner who was let go when he couldn’t keep Plymouth in the Championship.

SWISS CAPTAIN INLER GARNERS INTEREST
Gokhan Inler is attracting interest from Serie A side Fiorentina as well as a few Premiership clubs, according to the Switzerland captain’s agent.

The 25-year-old midfielder had avoided transfers in the past, happy to stay at Udinese, but his agent, Dino Lamberti, has intimated that may change after the World Cup.

“Gokhan is very in demand, above all in England,” he told violanews.com, an unofficial Fiorentina news site. “I still don’t know if he will leave Udine. Right now, he is only thinking about the World Cup and doing well with Switzerland. Afterward, we’ll speak with Udinese’s directors and find a solution.”
