2010 WORLD CUP – INJURY UPDATE JUNE 14

LEDLEY KING RULED OUT OF WORLD CUP

Ledley King’s World Cup appears to be over after the England Center back injured his groin during Saturday’s draw with the United States.

The England medical team is continuing to monitor the Tottenham defender and England manager Fabio Capello’s initial comments that King’s injury would only prevent him from missing Friday’s Group C encounter with Algeria, now seem optimistic.

Capello, already dealing with the loss of Rio Ferdinand to an injury sustained in training, will be concerned about his backline’s attrition, with only Jamie Carragher, Michael Dawson and Matthew Upson remaining in his squad to partner John Terry in the heart of his defense.

“We have those three defenders,” said Capello. “I hope we will not have any more injuries.”

DEL BOSQUE CONFIDENT OF INIESTA FITNESS

Spain manager Vicente Del Bosque feels confident that Andres Iniesta will be in the starting lineup for the teams Group H opener against Switzerland on Wednesday.

Iniesta suffered a thigh injury in a Word Cup tune-up against, and the Barcelona midfielder has been training away from his teammates in hopes of making the starting lineup.

“Iniesta will play and he will be in the starting line-up,” said Del Bosque.

DROGBA TO PLAY IN IVORY COAST OPENER

Ivory Coast have received a boost with the news that captain Didier Drogba looks likely to be fit for the Elephants opener against Portugal on Tuesday.

Drogba underwent surgery last weekend on a broken arm sustained in the friendly against Japan and the Chelsea striker was thought to have been ruled-out of one of the most anticipated match of the Group Stages.

Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson insists the final decision will be down to the player himself.

“The decision to play will depend on Didier himself and the specialists,” said Eriksson.

STAR PLAYERS TO MISS OUT NETHERLANDS-DENMARK MATCH

Netherlands midfielder Arjen Robben has rejoined the Dutch squad ahead of their World Cup opener against Denmark on Monday, but will not take part.

The Bayern Munich winger suffered a tear to his hamstring in a tournament tune-up against Hungary, and Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart is likely to take Robben’s place for the Group E game against Denmark.

Meanwhile Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner is likely to be missing for Denmark with a groin problem.

Bendtner is still struggling with a groin injury and has not seen action since May and although he has resumed training with the squad this week, manager Morton Olsen.

Jon Dahl Tomasson is likely to take Bedtner’s place in the starting line-up.
