SUMMER FRIENDLY UPDATE: FENWAY PARK TO HOST CELTIC v SPORTING

The long rumored Celtic match at Fenway Park is now official.

The match, being referred to as the Fenway Football Challenge will see Scottish powerhouse Glasgow Celtic take on Sporting CP of Portugal on July 21 at 8pm ET. The match, which will be the 19th soccer match to be played at the ballpark, will be televised locally by sports network NESN.

Tickets will range from $20-$120 and go on sale at noon on June 22.

Originally billed as the Battle of Boston, Celtic were to host perennial rivals Glasgow Rangers in the first ever ‘Old Firm’ derby to be played outside of Scotland.  That deal fell through when Rangers canceled their North American tour after being offended by a Boston Globe article that called the clubs fans into question.

Rumors that Major League Soccer team New England Revolution were attempting to replace Rangers in the match picked up speed last week when it became clear that the Celtic match could still take place.

Sporting will be in North America to participate in the inaugural New York Football Challenge against Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and the host Red Bull New York. Their first match of the tournament is scheduled to be played the day after the Fenway Park encoun

In a bit of extraordinary trivia, Fenway Park has hosted Celtic before, in 1931 when, ironically it was defeated by the New York Yankees of the American Soccer League.

The match at Fenway, which is approaching it’s 100th anniversary, will be the first at the stadium in over 40 years.  The last soccer match to be at Fens was on July 9, 1968, when Pele and his Brazilian side Santos FC played the Boston Beacons of the NASL.
