Forwards

Edson Buddle – Los Angeles Galaxy

Clint Dempsey – Fulham FC

Robbie Findley – Real Salt Lake

Herculez Gomez – CF Pachuca

The most glaring was the omission of Brian Ching. An established, experience striker, Ching was healthy and performing well in camp, but the decision was to go with Findley who is neither established nor experienced at this level. Though recovering from hamstring problems, Ching looked a bright spot in the Tuesday night match against the Czech Republic.

Findley is a quality player and can olnly get experience at the top level by playing at the top level. He has, no doubt, been brought in to replace some of the speed the team lost when it lost Charlie Davies

Conversley, Alejandro Bedoya was left out of the 23-man squad because of his inexperience. Bedoya also had a good camp and certainly would have been a better gamble, based on need and postion than Findley provides for depth up front. Still only 23, I believe Bedoya still has his best days in front of him.

Jonathan Bornstein’s appearance should not surprise anyone. Bob Bradley seems to be the left back’s biggest fan. Bradley used him everywhere he could when the two were together at Chivas USA and Bornstein has been a staple since. I have no faith in his ability at left back at the highest levels, but Bradley does.

No doubt, the ability to use some players at multiple positions helped Bradley cover his bases, so to speak. DaMarcus Beasley can play on the wing or at fullback. Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan can also be versatile, so that may have freed the coaching staff to make decisions in other areas.

What is certain, is that the USA XI, if healthy, will compete. The starters are an impressive bunch and Bradley and Co. have gone for a flexible bench that should be able to provide him whatever he feels is needed, whether that be speed, size, defense, possession or opportunity.
