NUTRILITE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP-WEEK 5 PREVIEW

Montreal Impact have a chance to play spoiler for the Vancouver Whitecaps Nutrilite Canadian Championship dreams for the second straight year.

In the final match of the 2009 NCC Montreal played what amounts to a youth side and was punished by Toronto FC who need a lopsided win to secure the title from Vancouver.

In 2010 Montreal, who is already eliminated from the competition, will have to play spoiler by action as opposed to inaction, as Vancouver needs the maximum points from Wednesday Nights visit to Saputo Stadium in order to set up a chance to win the Voyageurs Cup next week in Toronto.

The now legendary story of the 09 NCC seems to be a demon that permeates every article and conversation regarding the NCC, but hopefully, one way or the other, that demon will be exorcised Wednesday Night in Quebec.

What Impact manager Marc dos Santos will do with his lineups is a mystery.

“For sure some key elements will rest because the most important game is Sunday against Carolina,” Dos Santos said in The Province. “But the team is going to be very competitive. We’ve got a lot of depth this year and a lot of players who could be starters. Our mentality has changed a lot.

“We have to respect people who come to the stadium, who buy tickets.”

Regardless of the Lineups, Vancouver must secure maximum points and that means a win against whoever starts for Montreal.

“In a way, they’ve got nothing to play for,” Whitecaps captain Martin Nash said, “but if they give some different guys a chance, they’ll have something to prove, which can be dangerous.

“We can’t expect them to be taking it easy. We’ve got to win and we’re going to go for it.”

The match will be the 50th all-time between the two clubs and the eighth meeting at Saputo, the ‘Caps having only won their once before. this fixture last season was won soundly by Vancouver 2-0.

Montreal trails Vancouver by one point in the NASL standings but have a match in hand. The ‘Caps are coming of a 2-0 win against Rochester, the final match of a 5-game home stand.

Last Wednesday Vancouver outlasted Toronto at Swangard in Week 4 of the NCC in a rather moribund 0-0 affair, that provided the ‘Caps with a vital point to stay alive in the competition, but the story is the Vancouver defense, which has yet to allow a goal in May

The Impact are also coming off a win against Serie A side Fiorentina in an friendly at Saputo on Sunday.

The ‘Caps know that anything less than a victory on Wednesday will hand Toronto the NCC, voyageurs Cup and the Berth in the CONCACAF Champions League Qualifying round.
