SOCCER ON THE BOX: Soccer on TV this Weekend

SOCCER ON THE BOX: Soccer on TV this Weekend

It’s really a can’t miss weekend on the box. MLS Week 9, Summer Friendlies, International Friendlies, the 2nd Leg of Mexican League Final.

Oh, and did I mention the 2010 Champions League Final featuring Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan up against Bayern Munich, managed by the ‘Special One’s’ former mentor, Louis Van Gaal’s. There is no shortage of drama surrounding this Final, taking place on a Saturday for the first time in the history of the competition. It really is must see TV for any fan of the game, and a brilliant match to watch for people who want a taste of high level, high drama action ahead of the World Cup.

This is the final match of Fox’s first season broadcasting the Champions League in the United States, and I have to say they have done a much better job than I thought they would when they first announced the deal that saw the world’s greatest club competition move from ESPN.

Fox has pulled out all the stops for the Final. In addition to having LA Galaxy manager Bruce Arena providing analysis from the studio in Madrid, Martin Tyler and Andy Gray, possibly the most renown commentating combination in the English speaking world, will be in the booth together. If you haven’t noticed, I’m looking forward to it.

The Champions League Final isn’t the only final on the box this weekend. The 2nd Leg of the 2010 Mexican League Bicentenario. Toluca will be hosting Santos Laguna on Sunday, with the tie on a 2-2 knife’s edge.

Two friendlies at International level will grace the box this weekend. Saturday on FSP, tune in to see Turkey playing Czech Republic at Red Bull Arena, a match that is sold-out, but not by conventional means.

The US-based supporters group of Turkish side Fenerbahçe seems to have purchased 18,000 tickets for Saturday’s match. Seriously, I hope whoever took that call at the ticket office is on commission. Both combatants will face the United States National Team later this week.

Monday sees Mexico continue their run-up to the World Cup when they descend on the badly laid grass of Wembly Stadium to take on England in a match that will air live on FSC.

Red Bull Arena continues it’s busy weekend, as Red Bull are hosting Italian superpower Juventus in the first serious weekend of the Summer Friendly season. There are three other friendly matches being contested on Sunday, but the only other televised match is at the Home Depot Center where LA are hosting Boca Juniors on Fox Sports West.

There is MLS action too, though only 5 matches this weekend. Seattle hosting San Jose should be interesting on FSC though you might want to set the DVR as it competes directly with the Champions League Final on FOX. The Saturday nightcap of Chivas USA hosting Real Salt Lake should also be worth a look at.

If you can, check out the Promotion Playoffs from England on FSP Saturday Morning to see who the Premier Leagues newest team will be, and don’t forget the US Ladies take on Germany on ESPN2 on Saturday from Brown’s Stadium in Cleveland.

Enjoy it all.
