US SOCCER ANNOUNCES 30-MAN PRELIMINARY ROSTER

US National Team coach Bob Bradley has made his selection for the 30-man preliminary roster that will gather in Princeton New Jersey next week to begin final preperations for the 2010 World Cup this summer in South Africa.

The decisions are not quite over for Bradley as the US boss will have to trim his roster down to 23 by June 2nd. The US will play a couple of matches in the Northeast before the final cuts are made, so Bradley’s Boys will have a last chance to impress before the team departs for South Africa on May 30th.

Edson Buddle and Herculez Gomez, both thought to be ‘on the bubble’ were included and Eddie Johnson, thought to be outsider in the selection was included, but much of the news was centered around players left off the list.

Charlie Davies, still on the rebound from a tragic car crash last October, was not included in the 30-man squad and thus will not be available for the 23-man team. Davies recovery speed was remarkable, but feel short of the deadline.

Bradley, who was likely to face criticism, regardless of his decision responded to questions about Davies omission.

“[The decision was] incredibly difficult,” Bradley said. “Charlie has shown so much heart in his work to get back from his injuries. We’ve monitored all his workouts; we’ve had people there, we’ve observed him and he remained part of the consideration right up until yesterday. In the end of it, we also had information from his club whereby he hadn’t been given full medical clearance and, therefore, was not given a full release to join the camp.

“And so when we put that together with everything, we just felt that, right now, it’s in his best interest to continue his rehab and continue so that he can get back to the level that he was playing at last year before the accident.”

Other players not making the cut were Frankie Hejduk, Jimmy Conrad, Comor Casey, Jermaine Jones, Kyle Beckerman and Freddy Adu.
