SHORT CORNERS – SOCCER NEWS, NOTES AND RUMORS

IS HENRY GIVING BARCA THE KISS OFF?

THIERRY HENRY ON HIS WAY TO MLS?

The Mirror is reporting that Thierry Henry is on his way out at Barcelona and is headed to Major League Soccer. That will come as surprise to no one, but the new question seems to be; where will he land? DC United has emerged as the new favorite to land the French striker, who any Irishman will tell you, is just as good with his hands as he is with his feet.

BENITEZ ON HIS WAY TO JUVENTUS?

Rafael Beneitez has until the end of the week to accept an offer from Serie A side Juventus. Benitez recently signed a contract extension, but has made no bones about the fact that the situation at Anfield has changed around him. Lets face it, he doesn’t want to stay and the Liverpool ownership, fans and players don’t want him to stay either. Who will replace Rafa at Liverpool?

FIFA NOT PLEASED WITH BRAZIL’S WORLD CUP PREPARATIONS

FIFA has had some “not very nice” things to say about the organizers of the 2014 World Cup. Host’s Brazil have been called out on their preparations falling behind schedule. Comments like “Brazil is showing it is very difficult to organize a World Cup in Brazil, as it was difficult in South Africa” are disturbing and statements like “It’s incredible how late Brazil is, and I’m talking about all the stadiums. A lot of deadlines have passed and nothing has happened. Brazil is not on the right path.” are more worrisome still, but the clincher is “This year, there’s a presidential election so almost nothing will happen. Next year, Carnival comes along. So everything’s only going to start after Carnival?” Yikes. Lets just have the States host in 2014 and give Brazil 2022, that should allow them enough time.

Meanwhile in South Africa, the 27,000 construction workers who have worked to build the ten Stadiums for the 2010 World Cup have been rewarded with tickets to the matches. Nice job.

SHAKIRA FAILS TO IMPRESS

Pop star Shakira has penned the 2010 World Cup theme song Waka Waka (and no she didn’t co-author the song with Muppet, Fozzy Bear) but the tune isn’t going over as well as some would have liked. In fairness, no one ever remembers the World Cup theme song, and frankly, everyone is a critic, Hips don’t lie, people.
