SUPERLIGA: DATES AND VENUES ANNOUNCED

Major League Soccer and the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF) unveiled the dates and venues for the 2010 edition of SuperLiga on Thursday.  SuperLiga features MLS and Mexican soccer clubs and awards the winner with a big cash prize.

The four Major League Soccer teams in the 2010 Superliga qualified based on their 2009 regular season record and excluding teams already competing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.  2009 Finalists Chicago Fire will lead the MLS sides, with Chivas USA, Houston Dynamo and New England Revolution rounding out the field.

The four invited Mexican clubs have yet to be named but an announcement is expected following the conclusion of current season.

The 2010 Superliga will be the fourth consecutive year of the tournament and will be played over eight days beginning on Wednesday, July 14 at Chicago’s Toyota Park and at New England, though Gillette Stadium has yet to be confirmed as the venue. Attention then shifts west where on Thursday July 15 Houston’s Robertson Stadium and Home Depot Center, home of Chivas USA, will host matches.

The following weekend will feature double headers being played in Chicago and Houston. On Saturday July 17 Toyota Park will most likely host the Chicago Fire v New England Revolution in the first match and the two Mexican League teams in the second match. Sunday July 18 will see Houston Dynamo v Chivas USA followed by a Mexican League night-cap at Robertson Stadium.

the final matches, played on the Following Wednesday and Thursday, July 21 and 22 will find all four MLS teams playing at home again against the final Mexican League opponents in their group.

The entire tournament will be broadcast live by TeleFutura in the United States.

The semifinals and final will be played in August and the schedule, venue and dates will be announced after the conclusion of the first round.

Only one of the first 12 matches of the 2009 edition drew over 10,000 fans but the final, held at Toyota Park in Chicago drew a sellout crowd of over 20,000 who got to see a thrilling 1-1 match won in penalty kicks by UNAL Tigres.
